Re: tell me about seaford
i grew up there
i loved it. there really is not much town to speak of, although there are a bunch of stores on merrick road, it's not the kind of town where people walk around and hang out in like northport or huntington.
the school district is very good, which explains the very high taxes.
right off washington avenue, north of merrick road is tackapausha, which is a nature preserve. there is a museum type building and the preserve itself stretches pretty far north.
if you are south of jerusalem ave you'll be in seaford schools but if you are north of jerusalem, near massapequa, you'll be in levittown schools.
the area near the harbor elementary school, down by the water, south of the 7th precinct is very diverse. there are huge mansions on the water next to old fishing shacks. it's definitely improved in the last 20 years though.
there are 2 elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. my graduating class was only about 140 and it hasn't gotten much bigger.
if you have any other questions FM me, i'll try and help if i can.

i grew up in Seaford too! I really enjoyed everything about it. I agree with everything LB said too-especially since we graduated together!
The high school was having a little difficulty a few years ago, but they have definitely been improving over the last few years. I think Seaford is a nice town, good schools, just not cheap!

I don't know if it's so much the teachers as it was the students. I graduated in 1998 and my sister in 2003, I think it was after my sisters class that the kids were more on the rowdy side, from what i was hearing from people still associated with the school. I don't want to be rude, but it was a bad group of kids that were in the high school during that time, but i think the classes have gotten better over that time. They had more security guards b/c of how the kids were acting in and out of school, but i think it has calmed down since then. Obviously that can happen at any school really. There are those kinds of problems everywhere.
As for the education, I think I got a pretty good one in Seaford! So don't worry about that!

Re: tell me about seaford
DH and his family are from there as well. We would love to live there, but unfortunately, right now cannot afford the taxes and higher costs for the houses. It's our goal though to move there or near there when DS is older though.

Re: tell me about seaford
Live in the next town over, and have never once heard a bad thing about seaford, there are some very pricey homes south of merrick road. There are tons of stores on merrick road as well. Its very close to southern state, 135 and wantagh parkway. Train ride is about an hour, maybe less if express

I grew up there too and have to agreed with the previous posters. I loved that the graduating class was small and you literally know everyone in your grade and have been to everyone's house at least once. My graduating class (97) was about 190.
If you have any questions I grew up down by the harbor school on the water and my parents still live there.

I teach at the high school. In every small high school I know the classes run in cycles. The class of 2003 was by far the most competitive class I ever taught (class of 2005 was as well). The top 1/3 of the class were the most successful we had seen in years. There are some other classes, that while not as academically successful, are just VERY nice kids.
It all has to do with the FAMILIES of these students and it's like that everywhere. When the asst. prin. calls the list of students down to the office, it's the same last names... sometimes year in and year out. On the flip side, when you see the top 25 of a certain year, it's often the same last names that appear on the list a few years later when their siblings come through.
There will always be some students, in every district, with SEVERE behavioral issues. So severe that a regular school setting is not the best for them. Trust me when I say, administrators everywhere do their best to remove such students, however, it is compounded by educational law and the need for a lot of documentation and superintendent's hearings.
There was one year when a previous principal successfully removed 10 real hard-core offenders. Just the removal of those 10 kids completely changed the climate of the building.
Seaford is a great town. The most significant downside is the very high taxes compared to surrounding, comparable districts. The reason being very little commercial real estate. For example, Massapequa has the mall and the SD gets millions of dollars each year because of it. Seaford doesn't so the burden is on the individual homeowner.
Even though each house pays higher taxes, we actually have a smaller overall budget to work with. So taxes are higher and the average spending per pupil is lower.

Re: tell me about seaford
Their teachers were working without a contract for a very long time, and they might still be, I'm not sure but I'd look into that before I bought a house in the district.
I live in Wantagh and my kids have gone to nursery school with a few families from Seaford. It seems like most of the ones we know are going the Catholic school route, I'm not sure if that's a reflection on the district or their personal beliefs.

having grown up there, i 100% agree.
but i really do think it can happen in any school district. seaford is one of those towns that has a decent-sized population but still a small-town feel - everyone knows everyone else. and so the information - and gossip - flies
if the taxes weren't so high i would love, love to live there.

We were working w/o a contract for a year. It was settled but the current contract will expire next year. Negotiations always start at the beginning of the last year of a contract. During the last contract we negotiated during the last year of the contract, the contract ran out, and we were working for one year w/o one, therefore the first year of the contract was actually retroactive and we started under the second year of the contract. That's standard for any LI public school.
As a product of Catholic school and a teacher in public schools for over 15 years, I find that families who start in Catholic elementary school often continue and vice-versa. Most students who attend public elementary school and switch to parochial high school usually return to public after a year or less.
Due to the current economy, we have had several new entrants from Catholic school.

Re: tell me about seaford
What kinds of behavioral issues? You can always FM me if you want as well. I hope I don't get flamed for saying this, but I have gotten the impression a few times just being over DH's family's house, with the "kids" who pass by, that there are some rich kids who think their $hiT don't stink and they can say and do whatever the heck they want. Typical "punk" kind of behavior, probably because family is not actively involved except to give them whatever they want monetarily. Once after midnight, we had one of them come up and confront DH for no reason as we were walking to our cars, wanting to "fight".
But I am sure as well this stuff happens in every district/every town.
Both my SILs went the Catholic school route and my DH went to the HS. He graduated years ago though, back in '93, but believe it or not, is still super close with a huge group of guys he went to school with. They are always hanging out with each other.

I lived by the water for some time and I loved it (Island Channel). At least in that area, there is a nice restaurant and deli in walking distance, so it gives a little bit of a community feel. Once you get on Merrick Rd, that sense is gone.

I lived there for a couple of years when I was married. We lived in the Manor section, I loved IT THERE.. The people were real neighbors. The schools are great, they now have full day kindergarten.. Its a small town but a great place to live.... Easy to pkwys. Surrounded by other nice areas. Taxes tend to be a little higher, cause there is no industry.. Its a great area in my opinion

Re: tell me about seaford
DH and I moved to Seaford a year ago. We researched a lot of towns and found Seaford was the best fit for us. Loved the neighborhood feel, the stores are close, parkways are close. The SD was a major thing for us and I researched it...it's TERRIFIC!!! We couldn't be happier with our choice of where to live and raise a family. Good luck!

I posted "elsewhere " so you know my feeling ...
Just like LB ... I grew up in seaford and Loved it! I graduated in 02 so I cant imagine that things have changed too much.
Seaford has a small town feel but offers a lot, great SD, great sports and music programs, very residential, very "suburban" feeling!
I would highly recommend

Re: tell me about seaford
I grew up in Seaford (near the Manor School) and I can't say a bad thing about it. The Manor area homes are mostly capes, split levels and ranches. My block was full of kids and everyone pretty much kept their homes nice.
I attended the Manor School and then the Middle School. I chose to go to Catholic High School for personal reasons (nothing to do with the school itself)
My DH and I purchased our first home in Seaford in 2003 (near the Harbor School). We're south of Merrick road over by Cedar Creek Park and we love it here.
I don't know much about the north part of Seaford (north of Jerusalem).
