Several kids in my DH’s family had 13th birthday parties like this. Basically a bar/bar mitzvah without the temple part. Not sure if this is what’s going on here, but from what I understand it’s fairly common in very reform circles.
.

Wow, that's interesting I never knew that.
I went to a lot of bar and bat mitzvahs of my friends growing up but never a 13th bday party like that.

Apparently 13th bdays in my mostly Christian town are popular too. I think it's about becoming a teenager, the girls want to do something special.

Re: Teen party gift question

We had a big celebration when DS turned 13 (not in terms of the amount of friends, but the activity). And we did it because it was his last year at his MS with friends he grew up with; and for HS all were going to different schools. I don't remember how much they gave, and we didn't care since as a PP said, we were the ones that chose to celebrate it bigger than we had done before.

In your case, I'd give between 50 to 70.

I haven't heard of anyone having a sweet 16. I have only heard of girls going on trips somewhere special with their families or a fancy dinner at a nice restaurant with a few close friends to celebrate their 16th bday.

I've seen Sweet 16s recently.
Maybe not a ton but they're definitely still around

So funny as my friend is an event specialist and she is overwhelmed with Sweet 16 things. It is non stop for her.

There ARE tons around as my friend is an event specialist and it is non stop for her. People even saying they can't get her to do their party as she is so busy.

I don't doubt that ther are a lot on Long Island, it just doesn't seem to be a specific thing in my town, I am realizing now as my son is getting closer to 16 and I am still not hearing of any. I thought it was just because I didn't have kids in that age group that I didn't know about them, but now that I do, I am realizing there aren't any. My daughter just got invited to her first bigger 13th bday but it wasn't huge, just a dinner of about 20 girls at one or the yacht clubs.

Yeah maybe when all the girls turn 16 he will be invited to more. I think it is more of a girl thing though as I don't think my son went to any but my daughter went to a bunch.

Maybe but I doubt it. I literally have not heard of one and now we have a ton of friends with kids that just turned 16 or are about to. Definitely think it is more of a girl thing for sure. We live in a pretty small town though - less than 250 graduates each year at the HS. We have friends from the next town over and our good friends daughters were invited to a few so definitely more popular there. That town has a lot more jewish people and I feel like if you have a lot of girls that have bat mitvahs in a town then the girls that aren't Jewish want to have a big sweet 16 because they feel like they missed out on a giant bday party. There are very few bar/bat mitvahs in my town also, in my son's grade there were only three, he was only invited to the one boys party and neither of the girls. I don't really know why it is like this. I could see my daughter wanting one but she is also obsessed with her birthday. It's like a month long event.

Ahh ok. Our high school is more than just 1 town. Just going by what she has said and she has clients from all over the island, not just in her district or town.

I would give back what they gave you, just as you did for the other bar mitzvahs. I don’t see why it being a girl or not a religious event would have any bearing on a gift. So either $72 or $75.

Had nothing to do with it being a girl or religious thing. Was just trying to see if people compare it to a sweet 16 or bar mitzvah type since that's where the kids are at. It's his first just big bday party that's not a boy where they are going to Top Golf or a fancy bar mitzvah he's invited to. It sounds like just a fancy 13th birthday party I mean

Wow for a 13th birthday? Honestly I would give like $30 then.

Thanks! This is why I was confused. I do think she's having a DJ and it's 4 hours. They rented the hall at a Fire House and it's all just kids. I heard she invited about 75 kids.
I will do more. SHe was at my son's bar mitzvah in May and they gave $72. He's either been at bar/bat mitzvahs or goes to a friend's 13th party at a place or sleepover. It was just different.

Ok I change my answer then. I was thinking it was a sweet 16. If it's a random 13 year old party then I think it would be OK to do less. Maybe $50 then if they are having a big thing with a DJ.

I have literally never heard of a big 13th birthday party at a hall.
To be honest it seems like she is jealous of her friends who are having bar and bat mitzvahs at this age and wanted a big party of her own.
I hear something new every day, I swear.

Just thought of you as I just saw video of a 13th party at a hall on my Facebook. Lol
