Re: teachers a question

I told my kids when I was three months along...mainly bc the co teacher I worked with was pregnant as well and they were sooo excited about it.
Our students returned on Monday and two of the students I had last year are in my class this year again and they were sooo amused by my big belly.

I told them when I was 17 weeks. I brought in cupcakes and we celebrated and took a poll on if we thought it was a boy or girl!

Re: teachers a question

I also teach HS. With my first pregnancy, I never told them. They kind of figured it out after awhile, and eventually one of my girls asked me out of class and the word spread.

I'm handling it different this time. I'll tell them on the first day of school, very nonchalantly. I'm going to say that since I'm pregnant and due in February, there will be another history teacher replacing me for the remainder of the year. I'll tell you more when I know more. The end. I doubt they'll care as they don't know me yet. But my kids from last year will be very excited when they find out!

I teach high school and plan on saying nothing. They can figure it out. I am also not telling work until I show.

Re: teachers a question

I too teach HS and am due in November. When I told my students last year, I was about 18 weeks or so. They were very excited. My new students however, who will not know me are going to figure it out if they haven't already heard from former students on the first day. I will simply tell them that there will be a substitute taking my place while I am out, but I will be returning in time for the Regents exam in January. The kids will be fine with it, I'm just worried about the parents!

I am however very lucky that I have a great chairperson and administration who are very supportive and hopefully will put those parents at ease or in their place, whichever is necessary.

Re: teachers a question

I think I am going to just tell them on the first day when we do our meeting- I usually tell them about me and my family and show them pictures.
I am going to explain to them how they need to be careful around me when my belly gets bigger and that I will need some really good helpers when I cant bend down anymore.
I am going to stress to them how special they are to be the class that shares this with me.

They are 3rd graders so I'm hoping it will contribute to better classroom behavior overall to have them feel unique.

I did the same, they figure it out eventually and most will ask you or find out from other students.

ETA I did towards the end of the year (I was 7-8 months) tell my students during scheduling I wouldn't be back at the start of the year (I am a School Counselor)

Re: teachers a question

I teach 5th grade and I told them when I was 12 weeks pg, because I didn't feel well and left the room pretty frequently. We played hangman and the answer was "Mrs. X is having a baby!"

Re: teachers a question

If they're high schoolers I don't see the big deal in saying "Mrs. _______ is expecting and due in ____!"
They're young adults, why hide it?

I have to Chat Icon about just letting your kids "figure it out"...what's the big deal about telling them? I think it's kinda nice to let them in on certain little tidbits of your life.

it's a VERY big deal if you're in a district where the parents run things. if the parents find out the first day of school, many will want to pull their child from the class. believe me, i've seen it happen.

i did not tell my students until i was 20 weeks. just in case anything happened, i wanted my level 2 to be done so i knew things were okay.

i'm not big into sharing my personal life with students. i keep things private. i told them because they would figure it out eventually and i didn't want parents gossiping.

i would never tell my students though on the first day of school. when they go home, the topic of conversation should be how their first day went, not Mrs. Soandso is having a baby and we're going to have a substitute, etc. that is a recipe for disaster.

I actually do work in a district like this--though I'm not on LI anymore, I'm in an affluent district in NC. The parents are like that.

My feeling is, I'm a damned good teacher, and if they want to pull their child from my class, so be it--that's one less reader's notebook I'll have to lug home. Chat Icon

Re: teachers a question

I'm not PG, just lurking...
Last year, one of our English teachers was PG. She told the staff after three months (for her, this was late Oct/early Nov), and told the kids right around Thanksgiving. They were all really excited for her. Some of them were behaving better in her class b/c they didn't want to hurt the baby by stressing their teacher!!

B/C h.s. students can also be VERY immature. One of my 12th graders pointed to my belly and announced that "that is what happens if you don't use a rubber" Chat Icon

The less convo about my pregnancy the best, thank you very much.
