taxes vent
Well in the midst of closing on a refinance i found out my taxes went up 1,500 from last year to this year... needless to say we wont be saving as much per month as I thought. Anyway I grieved my assessment for 2012-2013 so I thought this should have been reflected in the bill? does it not take over until next year?
i am sick worrying how we're going to continue to live here if our taxes are going to keep increasing like that in the next few years!

Re: taxes vent
Taxes on LI generally go up every year.
Apply for STAR when you can.
Also, if your DH or you joins the local volunteer FD or ambulance division, you can get a good property tax deduction.
In Nassau, it's 10% of the assessed value of the property.

Re: taxes vent
Thanks, I know they go up I just didn't think it would jump up THAT much. I thought there was supposed to be a 2% cap. I have STAR already which I guess any bit helps!

Re: taxes vent
Where on LI are you? When we bought our Levitt cape in Levittown in 2005 our taxes were $7100. In 2009 when we were going to dormer they were $9200, and now after adding 935 sq ft of living space, they are $13,800 . This is all before start. I believe the star discount is $1280 in Levittown.

Re: taxes vent
I am terrified because the house we are in contract on has very high taxes, based on the last appraisal done years ago, when the house was valued at $331k. Needless to say, we are getting it for much less but we need to jump on STAR and grieve them. I am not happy that I have to write such a huge tax check at closing

Re: taxes vent
Flash forward 10 years from now when they go up even more and people's salaries fail to catch up...long island is going to be a mess
My DH and I were looking to buy some commercial property in nassau county and the taxes were so high we ended up buying in suffolk.

We're in Seaford (town of Hempstead) with Seaford schools. I know there has been problems with the budget lately but I did not expect such a large increase. I also thought there was a 2% cap. I could only imagine how much my taxes would be if I added an extension!

Re: taxes vent
The issue with Levittowns high taxes is that there is no commercial property

Wow thats weird, I would think all those stores on hempstead turnpike would definitely help out! I know where I am there is zero commercial property.

If you grieved for the 2012/13 tax year, you won't see the benefit yet. The 2012/13 school tax bill doesn't even come out until October 1, 2012. The 2013 general tax bill comes out January 1, 2013.

The majority of the properties on Hempstead tpke are credited to the Island Trees school district, not the Levittown school district.

Did you apply for the tax program that spreads out the tax hit if you spend more than $3000 in capitol improvements? It's a NY state program and the tax hit is 100% the first year and the exemption amount is slowly reduced over 8 years so you get some relief and don't take the big hit all at once. Instructions and form are below. It's only for renovations, not ordinary maintenance and repairs.
Instructions Form RP-421-f

Re: taxes vent
The home improvement tax program is only good on properties where your homes value increased 80 thousand at the most. Mine increased 100,000 dollars in value
