Our house was so over assessed because the previous owner lived overseas and rented it out. He never bothered to fill out a grievance. We bought it SIGNIFICANTLY under what the assessed value was so they readjusted it based on our purchase price. I just got the notice two days ago that our county tax dropped about $800. Not sure what the impact will be on our school tax.

On the flip side, because we bought the house while it was over assessed, and after the opportunity to file the greivance for 2007 or STAR had passed- we are overpaying in taxes this year by a few thousand dollars.

Ours went up $600 too, but at least our STAR kicked-in this year, so they work out about $400 lower.Chat Icon

Re: Taxes

It's a double-edge sword - if you vote the school budget down you risk the value of your house going down, if you don't you pay more taxes :(

Same happened to us and we also grieved them. Ours went down about 17%.

our taxes went up 2K from 4 years ago. Talk about blowing the budget. Good thing our salaries increased or we would be screwed.

Re: Taxes

Ours went up too and we missed the Jan. 2nd cutoff to send in our STAR application. DH's mom has been in the hospital and I completley forgot about it. Now we have to wait until next year to get any kind of break.

Re: Taxes

Ours went up about $200, I was really worried they would go up more. I applied for star and they told me that it wouldn't kick in until 2008 but we benefit from the previous owners star application.

Does anyone know if we have to apply every year?

the re-assessment really put some homeowners in a bad situation. My taxes were $4200 with star and then then went up to $6200 when nassau had the re-assessment. Our house was assessed at $210K and then after the re-assessment it was assessed at $409K. Just about double..but Nassau hadn't been assessed in decades. Many homeowners saw their taxes skyrocket.
