Talk to me about walkers
Are these considered safe? Do people still use them? I remember growing up these were all the rage, and then they were considered dangerous.

Talk to me about walkers
They are considered unsafe because of stairs. As long as you block off the stairs and don't put them in for too long you should be fine

Re: Talk to me about walkers
I used one with DD (she's 2) and it was great. We didn't have stairs to worry about and it allowed her to be more mobile when she didn't quite walk yet. I didn't leave her in it all day and encouraged walking. It was fine. She walked at 1 yr. so no issues here.

Talk to me about walkers
DS is 10 months, not walking yet, we just started putting him in it and he isn't crazy about it yet, not sure he "gets" it lol. We also have no stairs.

Talk to me about walkers
I used one with my older kid, so no judgment, but they are also unsafe in the kitchen-- hot liquids, sharp knives, etc. Having said that, DS was VERY unhappy sitting on his own, and wanted to move all the time. Was the only thing that made him happy.

Re: Talk to me about walkers
My ped wasn't a fan, so we skipped it. I have a friend that swears by hers though. If you choose to use one, I'd keep bathroom doors closed, stairs gated, and keep them out of the kitchen for safety.

Re: Talk to me about walkers
Not only stairs but, because they can get themselves over to things and reach things that aren't safe. When i was a baby i got very sick because I used to walker to get over a plant and ate it! My mom said it happened in like 2 seconds flat. I wouldn't get one. I used an excersaucer for DS instead.
Plus they are bad for developement and encourage toe walking. link

Re: Talk to me about walkers
We used one. My son loved it. He loved his sense of freedom. I had it in my kitchen so I would put him in there while I was getting stuff done. My pediatrician strenuously frowned upon it but he survived!

Talk to me about walkers
My ped tells his pts not to use them. I remember a few of my cousins falling down the basement stairs in their walkers, although they "always kept the door closed". Accidents are just that, they're never intended and I'd rather be safe than sorry. Based on the above reasons I never considered getting one.

Re: Talk to me about walkers
We had 2 for DD. She loved it. We put her in it for short amounts of time when we were there to watch her. She loved the ability to move around. Our stairs were gated.
