talk to me about clomid
Hi! I will be starting my first round of clomid this thursday for 5 days. I know its dumb, but I feel nervous about it. I have never taken it before and am worried I will have side effects. Please talke to me about your experience with it. I seem to ovulate on my own and am confused as to why a doctor would recommend it if you ovulate every month. How this this help me get pregnant?? TIA

Re: talk to me about clomid
I just took my first cycle of Clomid last week. I took 50 mg for 5 days. Today is CD 12 and I have one follicle at 20.5mm so I guess it worked. I had no side effects, just a little cramping but not sure if that is why. Good Luck!

Re: talk to me about clomid
I did 100mg the first month and it was way too much. Then I did 50 mg and it was better. I didnt get any hot flashes some people get, but I got very emotional/hormonal.
Clomid helps you mature follicles, not O. I O on my own also.

Re: talk to me about clomid
I take 100mg for day 5-9. I also O on my own but after a year and a half with out getting PG my dr decided to do clomid with IUI. I know have multilpe follies so we hope one with make it one of these times.
I ahve had zero side effects but I take it at night so I might just sleep through some of them if I have any.

Re: talk to me about clomid
I also ovulate on my own and I took 50mg to help increase the number of follicles I had for IUI and hopes of one sticking. The only side effects I had was hot flashes and I also feel crampy around the time I ovulate.

Re: talk to me about clomid
thanks everyone! I am not being monitored. My Ob/Gyn is prescribing it. I am not pairing it with IUI. Did anyone else do it this way?

Re: talk to me about clomid
you should really be monitored. its really unwise to not be monitored because you wont have any way of knowing if it was effective or not - ESPECIALLY if you already ovulate on your own.

I completely agree with the above post...and wanted to add that I was on the lowest dosage of clomid and did not experience any of the normal listed symptoms but did experience "dryness" it was not the most pleasant but only lasted about a week.

Re: talk to me about clomid
if you don't mind me asking, why is your ob/gyn prescribing clomid if you already ovulate on your own? how long have you been TTC?

Many people get put on clomid even if they ovulate. I am on it with IUI's because even though I ovluate and DH has great counts we still after 1.5 years are not PG. So clomid ups your chances since it produces multiple follies.

Re: talk to me about clomid
She will be monitoring me, but only once per month to ensure I didn't develop any cysts. I have been trying to conceive for 18 months now and I guess I am becoming desperate. After thinking about it, I am leaning towards not taking it now. I am just sooo confused. I don't want to mess with something that seems to be working okay (meaning my ovulation).

Re: talk to me about clomid
I agree with PPs. You should be monitor closely when using clomid. More then once a month. When I was on clomid a went to the doctor many times over the course of my cycle to monitor my response to the medication. You should consider seeing an RE. They will do a full work up and then prescribe a protocol based on what they find.

Re: talk to me about clomid
as for the clomid. It didn't mess up my cycle and I ovulate llike clock work ever month. I just think it's really important you are monitored closely when taking any fertility meds. Also, I don't know if your obgyn has done any testing, but if not I it's important to have testing for you and your DH to see if something is going on before jumping to fertility meds. You may be ovulating but something else could be going. For example, you could have blocked tubes and no amount of clomid will not help with that. So unless you have been fully evaluated you really don't know if clomid would be a good choice. JMO

Re: talk to me about clomid
I've had two cycles of clomid 50 mg days 5-9. I felt fine. No side effects. I am now with an RE and in day 10 of my first cycle doing IUI. The RE upped the clomid to 100mg days 3-7. This time I did have some cramping, but nothing terrible.
In my opinion- I would ABSOLUTELY recommend going to see a specialist at this point and begin testing. It seems kind of harsh to start taking clomid if you haven't had an HSG, endometrial biopsy, blood work etc...

Re: talk to me about clomid
I saw Dr. B. I had all the tests done. Everything looks good on my side. DH sperm count is just at the normal mark. I am looking for the most minimally invasive fertility treatment possible. Did 1 IUI unmedicated.

ITA- they gave me 100mg the first month and I ended up with a 40mm follie/cyst. Next month I took 50mg and had a 24 and 25mm follie at CD10 which was pretty quick. There is a chance of hyperstimulation with clomid so they should do a sono about a week from when you begin taking it.

Re: talk to me about clomid
I also ovulate on my own and DH's counts are good. I was given 50 mg of Clomid. We did that with back to back IUIs and had success with our first cycle.
This was after 16 cycles of trying on our own.
I agree with previous posters, I don't think that monitoring once a cycle is enough. With more frequent monitoring, they can check the # and size of your follies and help you to time BD better.
Personally I would never use a fertility med without strict monitoring from a specialist. I still think it can be minimally invasive and since you started seeing Dr. B if I were you, I'd continue with him (or another RE if you weren't happy with him).
