Taking a 1 & 4 yr. old to NYC ....
We're invited to a birthday party for close friends in Manhattan. It's on a weekend that DH is working so it's me with the kids. Never taken LO to the city so I'm looking for some insight in riding the train with them, bringing a double stroller, etc.

Re: Taking a 1 & 4 yr. old to NYC ....
If you are taking the LIRR in you might just want to cab it to the location you are going to. Cab has a trunk to hold the double stroller ...the subway and the stairs of the subway with 2 small kids is a bit intimidating to me. I believe there is an elevator in Penn to get the street ... you also have the escalators to get the street which is not so bad.

On a weekend, I would drive in and park it in the garage. Much easier than maneuvering the stroller on the trains, stairs and escalators.

If you can drive I would do that. LIRR would probably be a huge hassle with two kids alone.

You could probably do the stroller with the LIRR just fine. The subway, I don't know. A regular stroller is intimidating enough for me.
I would just ride to Penn and cab it from there. I just don't see how it's possible to get the kids and the stroller up and down the stairs of the subways.
Edited for spelling.

It's doable either way. If the party is on Sunday, it is pretty easy to find street parking in many areas. On Saturday, parking in a garage is your best bet. Coupons can save you money. Look online. If I went by train, I'd take a small stroller for the baby. If your 4 year listens, take him by hand (he walks). Map your course to make sure it's walk able).

Me too! I do a lot with my kids alone but the city and the double stroller frightens me! You're a brave woman!

I would have the 4 yr old walk and bring the lightest stroller you have. Also check to see which stations have the elevators

I would definitely drive, no matter the cost. Taking 2 kids on the LIRR and subway is way too hard alone! You can always find coupons for parking - go to bestparking.com or download the app.

I agree drive in if you can. Otherwise LIRR and cab. You'll have to make sure your subway stop has an elevator and just seems too stressful alone

Just wanted to add that if your younger child is good in a kiddie carrier (like a bjorn or ergo), this is the best thing. Keep little one in ergo, walk big one, pack a LIGHT diaper bag with supplies. It's the way I'd travel solo with 2 kids to lots of places (including city).

Don't bring the double if you are taking the train. It will be a nuisance. I have a hard time fitting my double into the trunks of small cabs. And unless you are going to be somewhere near penn station it is probably better to drive. It is pretty easy to find street parking on a Sunday and traffic is light.

Maybe a bit off topic but I always wondered why ALL subway stations don't have elevators. I mean what about disabled people? Is it not a law that these places should be handicap accessible?

Because they were beuilt long before the ADA was put in place and are grandfathered in until a major restoration is done.
I was able to slightly change my route to hit stations with elevators so its not impossible to do it. But then you need to check the website for outages.

Groupon and Living Social always have deals for Icon Parking garages for $25 for 24 hours. I've used them several times without issue. I agree about driving, so much easier with strollers.

I think it depends on where in the city you're going and what you're doing. I always drive into the city with DS. Just easier to park the car in a garage than to navigate all of the stairs with a stroller.
