Sushi during pregnancy
I am avoiding sushi like the plague because of everything I read and my doctor's advice, however a good friend of mine who is also pregnant says she eats it like crazy...and ate it during her last pregnancy. Is it safe to eat sushi? They keep wanting to go out and I know I will get funny looks if I am the only picky eater when we go for japanese, but i don't want to take any chances!

Re: Sushi during pregnancy
I haven't been. I think anything vegetarian or with cooked fish would be ok. But DH was very concerned that they would be cut on the same board as the raw things and could expose me to bacteria. It will definitely be one of my treats after this baby is born!

Sushi is raw...that you shouldn't eat.
But anything cooked should be fine.

Re: Sushi during pregnancy
I would stick with the cooked stuff.. Although, I asked my OB and she said
"There is a country called Japan and pregnant women in Japan eat sushi all the time! As long as the restaurant you are going to is reputable, you know that they take extra care of their raw materials, enjoy!"

Re: Sushi during pregnancy
Sushi is one of my few passions in life, and it is the only thing that my doctor told me not to have. He also said that, if I plan to go and just order anything with cooked fish, I should tell the waiter/waitress that I am PG and request that it be cut/prepared on a fresh clean board as not to expose me to the bacteria. I would recommend asking.

I disagree with this, only because the sushi in Japan is SO fresh that the fish are basically still flopping when you eat it. There is no way that raw yellowfin tuna in Patchogue, NY is that fresh.

I saw this, too, after avoiding sushi during my pregnancy. I think I might indulge more during my next pregnancy after reading this article.

japan has lots of tuna shipped in from MA - tons of tuna was shipped this fall and kept bumping my husband's company shipments because the tuna is perishable and gets priority in shipping
