If your child goes outside at school/daycare do you send sunscreen?
I sent a new tube in today and the teacher clearly thought I was nuts and said she heard I’m very particular about sunscreen (new class at the same daycare).
My bff never puts sunscreen on her 20 month old.
Am I the weird one here?

No your not the weird one. I don't send it in when they are in regular school but when they went to daycare(Preschool and prek were at daycare) I sent in a bottle every year after 6 months.
My daycare requests it and we are required to fill out a form for them to put it on.

My son wears sunscreen anytime he is outside. I provide Daycare with sunscreen so do all the other parents - they have a big bin with all the kids’ sunscreens. My sister had melanoma at age 30 - I am very strict. My son even applies “sunscreen” to his baby dolls.

Thanks. As I was driving to work I was thinking “shouldn’t everyone be particular about sunscreen?!”

For regular school recess, no. I think that a moderate amount of sun exposure (20/30 min) is better than slathering them with chemicals on a daily basis. But I know everyone has a different opinion about this.

Re: Sunscreen
Why did she think you were nuts for sending in a new tube today? Because it's fake "fall" now that Labor Day is over? Because it's time to break out the pumpkin spice bullshyt and put on your basic fall clothes of skinny jeans and riding boots even though it's Africa hot out?
It's 100 degrees out there and blazing sun. It's still technically summer too. And besides, you don't just wear sunscreen in the summer.

No my child burns like after 10 min I the sun he’s so fair. I use the badger baby sunscreen and feel the benefit of the sunscreen outweighs the risk. I feel the sunscreen isn’t over “chemical base” and would expect my child to have sunscreen applied if they are going out. Young kids have such sensitive skin and sun exposure can be harmful. It’s very warm out still and the UV index is still high. Sorry but you aren’t crazy the teacher is!

Yes there are plenty of sunscreens that are all physical, not chemical blocks, so they are 100% safer than sun exposure.

Re: Sunscreen
My daycare requires we provide a sunscreen for them. They also ask you to put sunscreen on your child before dropping them off.

I am very comfortable with sunscreen, both physical and chemical. I use neutrogena pure and feee or whatever it’s called but I would have zero problem dunking her in banana boat it that’s all that was available.
Whatever other parents choose to do with their child is none of my business. I am choosing sunscreen based on scientific evidence that it is safer than UV exposure and I am surprised that none of the other 15 parents in DD’s class have made the same determination about something that is easily googled.

Re: Sunscreen
When my daughter was in preschool, we had to put it on in the morning at home before school and then send in a bottle to keep in the classroom. They would reapply the sunscreen in the afternoon because they went outside twice a day.

Re: Sunscreen
I know school is different then daycare, but as a teacher I am technically not allowed to apply it to students (even if they are sent with it) so we ask that parents do it before school esp on days we will be spending a lot of time in the sun.

Re: Sunscreen
We always sent it to daycare. You are required to fill out a form (medication), but the teachers apply it no problem.
