Sunrise Mall?
I like the Macy's in the Sunrise Mall because it's usually empty and the cashiers just hand me coupons. People keep telling me to stay out of the mall because it's "dangerous" and there is "gang activity." It looks perfectly non-dangerous to me. Was there something in the news or some history that only a LI-er would know that I'm unaware of? It has all the usual stores, I find the store employees to be friendly.
I have to run to JCPenney later and I really, really don't feel like going to Roosevelt Field (which, IMO, is a crowded mess).
Please enlighten me, LIF!

Sunrise Mall?
Roosevelt Field had so many robberies recently (the stores, not just the parking lot). Sunrise Mall is fine.
Just like anywhere, just be aware around you. Park close to the entrance.
It's getting close to the holidays, a lot more parking lot robberies are going to start happening.

Sunrise Mall?
I live right by there and go there all the time. I love it because it's always empty (I guess because of the bad reputation). It has a decent selection of stores too.
I've never felt unsafe there but like anywhere else I shop I always make sure to be aware of my surroundings.

This. When I have to go to a mall I just go there because it's close.

Re: Sunrise Mall?
I have never heard of it having a bad reputation, nor have I heard of the area around it having a bad reputation.
I would rather get dental work than ever go to Roosevelt Field.
Like others have said, just be careful no matter where you shop.

Sunrise Mall?
Ok, I just thought I was tainted from a childhood filled with trips to Queens Center (anywhere is better than there).
I'm certainly not afraid of the place I just couldn't understand what everyone was talking about.

I guess I'm in the minority but I found it super sketch the last time I was there and wouldn't go back. But I don't really like the stores there enough to make it worth it anyway.

Sunrise Mall?
I haven't been in a long time, so couldn't tell you about it now. I recall a shooting there a long time ago, possibly at the movie theater that used to be there. And I think there was another person shot in more recent years. There was also a shooter at Roosevelt Field not that long ago. I did always think of Sunrise as less safe, probably because of the long ago shooting.

Same for me. I rarely go to malls anymore, but I wouldn't go wander around there. Every now and then I'll run into the Hallmark store if I HAVE to. But I don't go there anymore.

Re: Sunrise Mall?
I grew up in Massapequa so I use to shop at Sunrise my whole life. Back in the day when I very young (elementary age) it was pretty skanky and run down. Then they redid it and it was very nice for a long time, great stores and nice appearance. Over the years though it started to get a little run down again and many of the good, brand name stores were replaced with junky no name places (and lots of empty stores too!) that I wouldn't have an interest in shopping at. I don't think it's as nice as it was anymore and I really don't shop there now when I am in the area. (I live near Smithhaven now so that's my mall of choice )

Sunrise Mall?
I bought my daughters Christmas dress there at Sears. I usually go there or even the Bay Shore mall. I go during the day although I did go to sunrise mall once at dinner time alone and had no problem. I think that Roosevelt field mall is so crowded and its further from me. If I need something Im going to go out and get it.

Same here. I actually prefer the bayshore mall now if i am staying close. Sunrise is closer but bayshore is an extra 20 minutes away. If i am going to be shopping for a long time I go to smithaven

I go to there frequently. I love the Macy's it's quiet and just recently they updated it a bit. There is a Crazy 8 with the cutest clothes for kids and the Express there is decent.

Just curious, what makes it sketchy? The people walking around it? The overall feel? Empty stores?

Sunrise Mall?
I don't like the fact that it's deserted...it just makes me uncomfortable to feel like I'm walking around there alone.

Sunrise Mall?
Really??? Since when???? I've never ever heard that about Sunrise Mall, Green Acres on Sunrise, yes but Sunrise in Massapequa, news to me. I go there from time to time and never once felt worried, unsafe or that it was sketchy. It's kind of a dump and no stores are there that I can't live without but I've always felt safe shopping there. Roosevelt field is becoming a war zone, if anything I feel less safe there. Too many people, too much congestion, robberies, bomb threats, etc.

For me it's all of these reasons. I mean, really whichever mall you go there will always be someone sketchy walking around. I guess it's more the feel for me. The emptiness and I just get this uncomfortable feeling walking around there when I'm alone. When I am with DH I have no problems. I used to feel that way about the bay shore mall too but I get a better vibe now since they've redone it. If I'm by myself during the day I won't hesitate to go to bay shore by myself. I won't go to any mall by myself at night though.

Sunrise Mall?
Just got back. Lived to tell the tale. I don't get it. I like the fact that it's empty. You can park right by the entrance. And as far as old/outdated, it doesn't look any different decor-wise from Roosevelt Field. I was in and out of every store I needed.
Also, most of the other people shopping were elderly. So unless Grandpa was packing I don't think the shoppers are much of threat.

People were unhappy when Walmart was there. They felt it brought sketchy people in. I don't feel unsafe there.

Re: Sunrise Mall?
Any mall has the potential to be dangerous; people are shopping and bringing bags back to their cars, making them targets for robberies.
Of the malls I know in Nassau County, I don't think any is more dangerous than the others. Yes, I am including Green Acres in that statement. I know it has a long-standing negative reputation (though I do not really know why), but I was there at night not too long ago, and it looks and feels amazing...clean, bright, and updated.

Re: Sunrise Mall?
I live very close to Sunrise Mall, so if i need something quick, I'll run in there. The Macy's sucks. They don't have a lot of the stores I like, so i usually drive 15 minutes to go to Walt Whitman.
I find Sunrise to be sketchy after 5pm. Last time I went at night with DS, I literally picked him up and ran in the parking lot to my car.

Re: Sunrise Mall?
During the day it's fine. At night it's pretty sketch. Avoid parking by Macy's as for some reason a lot of the robberies happen around there. As the holidays come there will be an increase in robberies everywhere including the mall.

Yes I think people complained about the Walmart. It's fine, I generally go there during the day though. I always park by Macy's and don't feel unsafe.
