Stupid question: do you over exaggerate/translate your child's speech here?
Not as in bragging but in actual usage.
I see things like My two year old asked me why the remote was over there.... and I think to myself really!? AJ only says "remote?" and "where'd it go" but not actual sentences in proper form.
Then I just read a post where a 1.5yr old ratted out his grandpa (which is totally cool btw ) by saying "Papa give it in a bottle" (i think that may not be verbatium) and I wonder.. WOW how seriously behind is my child?
So from a late bloomer mom, I ask you other moms. Do you sometimes over exagerrate or paraphrase your children?
Not as a rub nor as a marker to my child's obvious delay but as a concerned mom wondering where her daughter fits in a world of speakers.
I know her classmates say things like "AJ sit, play?" or phrases of songs, etc but actual verbage usage in correct syntax..? No I haven't heard it but doesn't mean it doesn't happen but its it happening regularly?
I don't want to start drama. Just curious is all

Re: Stupid question: do you over exaggerate your child's speech here?
I don't.
People may not believe me when I tell them that at 14.5 months my DD has well over 80 words and is beginning to sting them together (good girl, bless you, not nice, etc), but I wouldn't lie. I have no reason to. I am very proud of her speech level but if she wasn't speaking so much I probably wouldn't think twice about it.

I don't think people over exaggerate, but I know when I interpret what my kids say, someone else sitting there may have thought it sounded like gibberish. According to alot of posts here my kids are wayyyy behind. They just started two word phrases at 23 mos. They are boys and preemies and are saying new things every day so I don't worry too much. Maybe around 26 mos I will investigate EI if they haven't moved on much

Personally, I don't. If I'm telling a story about Ryan it's verbatim.
Colin has a about 10 words so if you see me writing anything about a conversation I had with him, then I'm exaggerating

My DD speaks in full sentences but I think having an older brother who doesn't ever shut up probably helps that , so for me, no I don't over-exaggerate what she says...I actually kind of miss the mispronunciations and little cute phrasing she used to do more often

I dont think its done on purpose, just how we interpret it in our heads. When I tell a story about my nephew I will say that HE said the potty "doesnt work."
However, what he REALLY said was "no work?" and work doesnt really have an R in it. . .
I have ALREADY told stories where DD will spit out the pacifier like "WTEFF?!" but she doesnt reaaaally say that

I agree DD is also the same way as your Daughter her speaking is very advanced for a 16 month old.

Re: Stupid question: do you over exaggerate/translate your child's speech here?
I don't think so. Frankie has always been a very verbal kid...it's quite shocking actually to us even. So maybe it sounds like I am. We shake our heads at some of the things that come out of his mouth at times in perfect context. Like last night for example... "Daddy don't change the channel, I want to watch Nick Jr. cartoons." Of course, DH changed the channel after that..
Kids develop on their own level. Some talk early while others walk early. Heck, my husband still hasn't quite figured out exactly where the laundry goes and he is almost 40." Try your best not to compare kids at this age, it's why there is such a huge range for developmental milestones.

I definitely agree with this--I know what my DS says, but I can't say that a stranger on the street would understand his words, KWIM?

no, but i do know it's possible that kids can be insanely advanced or just 'normal' or even slow.
my neice, at 11 months was saying words, calling Emma 'baby', had like 20 words... their ped even told them - if you have a second child - DO NOT EXPECT this....this is VERY advanced & is not the norm...

If I'm repeating a story, I definitely paraphrase unless the phrase was too cute that it require a quote.
And, there are plenty of phrases wherein I know what she's saying but someone else might not, I translate so it is understandable otherwise the story would have no meaning

Honestly, I don;t understand most other toddlers and preschoolers or I have to work really hard to so I think most people paraphrase when relaying a story-for clarity.

My DD (now 4) was like this.. I don't remember her NOT talking!
You should hear her vocabulary now! lol she doesn't ever shut up and sometimes I forget who I'm talking to! lol

Re: Stupid question: do you over exaggerate/translate your child's speech here?
I think it's also very important to note that children may develop at different rates. DS is very young (just turned 1 year today) and had 2 words by 11 months, but he was always very verbal (recalling back to my neices baptism when he was approx 3-4 months old and was having a little coo conversation during the ceremony...lol). He has yet to stand without holding on for more than a split second...some babies his age are able to do that...but I look at it as he is just a more verbal kid.
Obviously if there is a more dramatic difference, then the earlier a child receives services, the better the prognosis. I would advise you that instead of comparing your child to the reports you have on here, I would really ask for a perscription for an evaluation from an SLP. If she is on the right track, then you know. If she needs some support, then she'll get it. Either way you will be more relieved knowing either way.

Re: Stupid question: do you over exaggerate/translate your child's speech here?
Not at all. Eddie started talking at 10 months, was speaking in 3 word phrases by 18 months and in sentences by 2.
So no, I dont believe that other moms exaggerate at all. All kids have different language abilities at different ages.

I actually hope she's like this (call me crazy). When I speak to her now I annunciate every word, I point things out to her, everything she does- I explain. For example- she was in the bath last night and was trying to pull the drain stopper out. So I said- "That's the drain stopper. If you pull that out the water will be all gone."
Language is very important to me so I want her to speak alot and have a large vocabulary and a good understanding of things.
Yes- I know. I may fully regret this in a year.

Landon too. Having a conversation with his is like talking to a mini-adult. He is 2.5! I can't believe the things he says sometimes. He really amazes me.
He is NOT perfect though. He has a lisp and talks in the third person.

this is exactly what our Pediatrician had told us with our next child...although I was considered a "gifted" child, ...so who knows...

No I don't -
I don't feel the need to exaggerate anything about my life to my 'real' friends, or my 'internet' friends. -
Why bother?
I realize he's pretty advanced in his speech - I also realize my next child may not be this way ........Every kid is different, and we all have different things to be be proud of and 'brag' about

Same, and I know that having an advanced vocabulary at an early age doesn't mean crap, so I laugh to myself when I hear other moms (IRL or on here) "brag" about it or make up stuff
