Strep B Positive

So apparently I am strep B positive and my DR doesn't seemed concerned...they just said I have to have an IV of penicillin during birth...does anyone have experience with this and is there anything else I should know? Or is it just that simple...I know, I'm neurotic..can't help it...thanks!

It is that simple and is very, very common. I had it too. Only other thing is that if your water breaks you have to go straight to the hospital, even if you haven't start contractions so that they can give you the IV.

Re: Strep B Positive

no biggie, although I am sure you are freaking out. I was strep b pos with my 1st and was treated preventatively for each of my other pregnancies as well. It is very common, no need for alarm, just make sure you get tot he hospital soon after your water breaks or when your contractions become more intense/cyclicChat Icon Chat Icon

yep, that simple.
They say you should remind the nurses when you go to L&D just in case, so they know to give you the IV.

Also, when i gave birth to DD i hadn't gone through the full recommended amount of penicillin and she was fine.

I had it too...I was induced and they gave me the iv while I was laboring....I will not lie, for some reason the "serum" stung like a b!tch but I did not care at that point because I was having contractions Chat Icon

It will be fine, no biggie

Re: Strep B Positive

I was postive for it as well with dd, they just give you the penicilin when you are admitted. its very commen, try not to worry too much, just make sure you tell them when you get there (even though it is in your file, so they can start it right away for you)

VERY common. Nothing to worry about.
They give you an IV during labor, it can sting a bit, but they can turn it down so it doesn't sting.
