Starting Solids - How much to feed baby at first? I am really confused.

Ok, so we were unsucessful with cereal at 4 months & he is doing better now at 5 months. He's been having about 6 spoonfuls of cereal everyday for almost 2 weeks. Have no idea how many oz that is.

I want to start veggies on Sat. How much do I give him at first?

Do I continue to give the cereal as well so that he will now have 2 solid meals? How much of the cereal? what bottles do I replace? I have no idea what I am doing with food.

We have just been "testing" the spoon but plan on really making a feeding schedule now with proper amts.
This is what feeding looks like for us now.

7:15 am - 6 oz
10:15 am - 6 oz
11 am - a little cereal (really just for practicing purposes not to fill him)
1:15 pm - 6 oz
4:15 pm - 6oz
7:30 pm - 6oz

You don't replace bottles yet. Take your DC cues.

We started with 3 tbls of cereal (with one oz of formula to mix with) then we did that with 1 jar of veggie.
Youll know when they don't want anymore.. they wont open their mouth and turn away.. keep the bottles the same..just feed the meal right before the bottle. (that's what we did anyway)

good luck!Chat Icon

How much is in 1 jar of veggies? I am going to make DS food. I have food cubes that I'll store it in.

How does this sound for now? I think I remember my Dr telling me to start with 1 tbs cereal.

7am- 1 tablespoon cereal + 6 oz bottle
10am- 6 oz bottle
1pm - 6 oz bottle
4pm- 1 oz veggies + 6 oz bottle
7pm - 6 oz bottle

That sounds like a perfect start!

When he's ready, you'll know because he finishes the cereal and looks for more.

If you're making food, start with one cube, then go to 2, then 3 etc.

We didn't start giving full jars (twice a day) till 6 months or so. Before that it was only a tablespoon or two of each food, maybe 1/2 a jar if he really liked it.
