Stairs - how do you teach going down?

My LO is 16 months old and he will be getting a sibling when he is just over 21 months. He can climb up the stairs pretty well (I follow close behind every time) but I have no idea how to start practicing going down the stairs. I have a split level so I've been hoping we can practice more and more in the coming months and it could be helpful if I only had to hold his hand or be right there to guide him compared to carrying him since I will have a new baby too.

How did you practice going down stairs? Crawling backwards? Scooting down on your behind forwards? walking down step by step? (that last one could be tough for my son because his legs are a little short lol) TIA Chat Icon

Stairs - how do you teach going down?

I would just hold his hand and he'd use the wall or railing also. We never really taught it.

My ds goes up them great. Going down I always say to go down on his bottom but recently he wants to stand and hold on to the railing. I always hold his hand though. He doesnt go down by himself.

Stairs - how do you teach going down?

My DD is 15 months and she goes up them fast - with me right behind her. I forced her to sit down and turn around and go down backwards. She picked it up fast - now she sits down on the landing way before the step and scoots herself into position. I still follow in front of her.

Same. My thought was always to have her do it the correct way bc if you're out somewhere they can hold your hand and walk down the stairs correctly etc.

Stairs - how do you teach going down?

We always did the sit and scoot down, but my in-laws did the backwards on the belly. I don't like backwards, personally, because you can't see where you're going and I think that can be dangerous.

First she was taught to sit and skoot. Now she holds the railing and goes down.
