I think you fill out the paperwork at the hospital once you deliver.

When you fill out the paperwork for the birth certificate, the hospital will send in an application for SSN. I got ours 7 weeks after giving birth.

I know at Winthrop when you fill out the registration forms one of the questions is if you want the hospital to obtain a social security number. I elected yes because I couldnt imagine sitting at the SS office with a newborn.
