SPR: "Stealing" gift ideas

I am so mad, and maybe its just hormones.

#1 I told my m-i-l I was going to get DH a new electric razor as part of his XMas gift. Well today she calls me to make sure i didnt get it. I said "not yet but I am going shopping tonight". Her answer :"Sorry but I already got one for him from wal-mart. I got a great deal and couldnt refuse."

#2 My grandma has been harrassing me about what to get for little billy. I told her we were getting him the leapster2 and if she couldnt think of anything else, how about some games to go with that. So she calls me up and tells me she got him the leapster and my aunt is getting games.

I have SO much trouble figuring what to get people, and everyone always steals my ideas before I can even get my gifts. This angers and annoys me SO much I cant even tell you. My husband is IMPOSSIBLE to shop for, and when he mentioned the razor about 2 months ago, I was so excited to finally get him something he needed. Now I have no ideas what to get either of them Chat Icon

Honestly if I were you, I would tell your family to make sure they supply gift receipts as you have already or will purchase said gifts.

Grandma "bought" all of Landon's presents from ME (stuff I bought for him).

Why don't you sign (little) Billy up for a class? I am signing Ray and Landon up for swimming at Saf-t-swim.

Ok I thought maybe I was overreacting but (and you know I love her to death) m-i-l is ALWAYS doing this! And I cant really afford classes anywhere for Billy since I'll be out of work. There is a tot sports place right near me I might look at but its probably too much anyway Chat Icon

This is why I don't tell what I've giving, but what they can give.

So annoying, I know. I would get him the razor anyway, maybe he'll like yours better! Chat Icon

For little Billy - TRU has the Step 2 rollercoaster for $77. He loves Landons!

I would be annoyed but also grateful because I couls always find something to buy DS...BUT...my only piece of advice is when DC asks for something from Santa don't tell ANYONE and if they find out make it clear they are not to buy that gift. Your DC will be looking for it and you don't want it to say from G-ma Chat Icon

Re: SPR: "Stealing" gift ideas

I would stop telling your family what you are getting your kids. I think they are taking the things you are telling them about as their cue to get them those gifts. In the future I would ask your kids what they want, like a list to santa or go through the toys r us catalogue with them and see what they like. I do it in October, so I can figure out what to get and then tell our family what the kids like and give them some choices. For this year, perhaps you want to do an event with your kids, like a broadway show or a concert or a group of classes (gymboree, music together, swimming, soccer, cooking class).

No, my grandma KNEW I was getting it for him. When she called to tell me, I said "I told you I was going to get that" and she said "Well now you dont have to worry" Chat Icon

We dont have room in my house for them to pick out stuff from toys r us catalog, but the thing is - I tell them what to get and then they dont listen.

And the incident with my m-i-l happens every year. When we were in Disney last week, my husband was checking out a Disney cookbook. So I told her to distract him so I could go buy it. Well it ended up not being a good time and the next day she whispered in my ear "I'll be right back - I'm going to buy that book for billy". So I thought she meant she was going to get it FOR me for him. So I told her to wait and let me giver her money. And she answered with "no no no I want to give it to him" I put my foot down with that and I ended up being the one to get it.

I'm just not going to tell anyone ANYTHING anymore. When they ask what they want, I'm going to tell them to figure it out for themselves. Chat Icon

Re: SPR: "Stealing" gift ideas

This is exactly why I don't tell my MIL what I'm buying my husband.

For the last 9 years, she has bought him the same thing I have. And will always say, "oh, I forgot what you bough him."

This year, she didn't even ask me, she just asked what he needed and I told her.

Same with DD.

Ugh, I posted about this a few weeks ago b/c my mom does this ALL THE TIME. This year I told her I was getting DH a DVD player and she tells me a few weeks ago that she got it already and it's wrapped. UGH! Chat Icon DH is so hard to shop for so it makes it hard to come up with things for him. In the future, I'd kep a tight lip on those gifts anod not tell anyone what you plan to get so nobody can steal your ideas.

just buy dh the razor and give it to him before he sees his mom.

I totally agree with this. Then he can return the one she gives him and get something else. And if she says anything just say" But I told you I was getting this for him so why would YOU go out and buy one???" Chat Icon

Re: SPR: "Stealing" gift ideas

i would start telling them you're getting the opposite of what your husband or child really want. so if DH is not into fixing things or power tools and really wants a book or movie, tell MIL that you're getting him a tool set. that way she'll buy it for him, you'll get him the book or movie and you'll be the hero while he'll think she's nutsChat Icon

Re: SPR: "Stealing" gift ideas

I guess you'll have to stop telling everyone what you're buying for your kids and dh. They obviously can't think on their own or come up with any original ideas.

Re: SPR: "Stealing" gift ideas

i'd be ******. I've stopped telling people what im getting b/c my MIL will do the same thing. She does this for his birthdays and everything else..so i always just say im not sure yet, or skirt the issue and let her deal with it.
