spitting up concern please help

DD is 2 months old...she has always spit up/vomited...she was on similac advance in the beg after unsucessful BF she was spitting up 8-10times after each feeding sometimes projectile...we then switched her to the Isomil...that made it a bit better but she is still spitting up/vomiting alot in my eyes...i cannot feed her without a receiving blanket or washcloth when i feed her plus a bib...my hand gets soaked through these sometimes...i can burp her after drinking only an ounce and atleast half of it comes back up...she sometimes spits up for 30min to an hour after she eats sometimes no matter how still you sit her at what angel it dosent seem to matter...she sometimes spits up long after shes been fed...she falls asleep for a couple hours then if you are changing her or just sitting with her she spits up again and she hasnt eaten in so long...shes going to the doc on thurs for her 2 month so i will def. be bringing this up again, just wondering if anyone has experienced this or might have any idea of what is going on...im starting to get really worried and its bringing me really down in the dumps im having a lot more bad then good days lately it seems...
I also cant keep any of her clothes clean...she soaks them and i sometimes have to change her mulitple times a day because she would be sitting in wet clothes...

Re: spitting up concern please help

My DS is a spitter upper as well. He wasnt in the beginning though. We had him on Similac advanced and he had gas issues so we switched to Good Start. Saw great results with the gas, but the spitting up started.

He has a bib on at all times, I generally go through 2 per day. Burp cloths I have 2 per feeding with me and now the dog has started hanging out with us while Chris is eating in hopes of something coming up. (totally gross but what can you do?) He is the same as your DD, he can spit up (just a little but still) up to 3 hours after his last bottle! If I lay him down to play, there is sure to be something coming out, whenever he gets excited, more comes out. But he doesnt notice.

I asked my ped who said that most babies have a form of reflux as their systems all develop. She said first remember that it looks like a lot more is coming out than it actually is. And said if he is not uncomfortable, it was not a great cause for concern. Other suggestions she gave me was to lower his amount at each feeding, maybe break up his feedings if it gets bad. She said that is will get better as he gets older and sits upright more.

What I started doing with out hte ped, was when he has a bad day, in his 2nd to last bottle I just put a little rice cereal to help make it a little heavier.

Good Luck with the ped, I hope he/she can help!

ETA: Our ped was not concerned also because DS is flourshing, he is eating up to 7 oz per feeding (40oz per day which is more than she recommends) and he is 16lbs, so he is gaining weight nicely. She said if he wasnt gaining she would be more concerned

Re: spitting up concern please help

thanks for the responses...i know it probably looks like more then it is...but we go through a bib each feeding and a wash clothes each feeding plus atleast one for inbetween to clean up...I have tried feeding her less...but dosent seem to matter...i havent tried the rice cereal in the bottle yet i will ask about it thursday...shes starting to scream sometimes when she spits up...its coming up clear with a bit of milk once in awhile so i know its bugging the poor little thing...sometimes she could care less but sometimes it bugs her...she only eats about 4 oz per feeding...sometimes less sometimes a little more (no more then 6oz once a day it seems) she eats anywhere between every 2 and 4 hours in the day night she can go about 5-6 hours, still only eating maybe 4oz when she gets up...
shes not a huge eater, that maybe is just the kind of eater she will be though i dont know...

Re: spitting up concern please help

my daughter spit up like that... after eating, hours after eating- changes in position (picking up, changing, etc)- it was constant!
doctor said as long as DD was not in pain and was gaining weight, it was OK. some babies just spit up- it isn't necessarily something that needs to be medicated.
with that said, we changed DD's formula to Enfamil AR and it helped tons!
also- it doesn't go on forever- DD stopped spitting up around 7-8 months.

Re: spitting up concern please help

My DS is the same. I go thru a bib each feeding, at least 3-4 receiving blankets a day...more if we do a lot of tummy time b/c he spits up all over during that. He was BFed for 3mos, then formula, spit up the same w/either...I tried the soy but that didnt really help either. He is 6 months now and it has gotten better, but I'm still waiting for it to stop. He spits up all over his play mat, sometimes the exesaucer, etc, its sooo frustrating. I'm always cleaning his things and doing laundry!! I do put a tablespoon of rice cereal in every 7oz bottle and that seemed to have helped a little. Pedi said that as long as he is gaining and is not in pain, it is fine. Every time I go I complain about it to the pedi and he said that if I want we can have him see a GI doctor after the next visit (which will be his 6mo visit, tomorrow). He told me its more of a laundry problem for me than it is a problem w/DS Chat Icon

Re: spitting up concern please help

DanaRenee sounds like they are very similar babies with the amount of spit up...im hoping shes fine and gaining weight well...i think that is my biggest concern...shes not a chubby baby at all so im curious to see how much weight shes put on since her last visit...
i hear ya on the laundry...im glad i was given a million washclothes and receiving blankets at my showers...didnt think i would need that many but boy do I ever!

ETA: does anyone think its weird that she mainly only drinks 4oz at a feeding??? i see a lot of other babies are drinking far more then that!

Re: spitting up concern please help

My dd was the same way. She would spit up no matter how many times I burped her in between ounces.
I would go through a bib & burp cloth (cloth diaper) every feeding maybe more.

At least 2-3 outfits ,4-5 bibs & 4-7 burp cloths a day.

She would also spit up hours after a feeding. Sometimes it looked like it did going in & sometimes it was almost clear.

Since she was gaining weight and at 1st it wasn't bothering her much we left it alone but then she started screaming when she'd spit up, arch her back & cry during feedings & burping. Once I saw a tinge of red in her spit up & that's when we started her on reflux meds.

TBH the Axid helped a bit w/ the irritation but not the spit up. It got really bad at 3&1/2 months and we started Zantac & rice cereal in her bottles.

She's a new baby now. I think its a combination of the meds & cereal. We started w/ 1 tsp for every 2 oz but bumped it up to 1 tsp for every oz.

It really sounds like Reflux. Def. talk to your Dr.
If dc is gaining weight and the spit up doesn't phase her I'd prob. just wait it out but if she's uncomfortable I'd put her on something.

Good Luck Chat Icon FM if you have any Q's.

Re: spitting up concern please help

last night i tried something dif...i try and burp her every couple of min...she might have only drank 1/2 an oz and not even burp...but she didnt spit up too much i was impressed...only problem is she only drinks like 2 oz this way and still will go the same amount of time between feedings so im afraid she wont gain weight properly if we keep that up!
hopefully we get some answers tomorrow...so difficult!

That sounds like my son. My life is all about stopping the spit up, trying to analyze why one day he spits up all day and doesn't another day. Dr is not concerned because he gains weight. I can't even change him when he spits up because he spits up on the new outfit while laying down.
The only time I know he won't spit up is at the dr's office so that i look crazy.Chat Icon

Re: spitting up concern please help

Candice.... I swear it... read my post about Kristina. She was doing the same thing.

I would def talk to your ped and see what he recommends.

We were having the same issue with the Similac Advance, so just yesterday her doc switched her to Similac Gentlease cuz she has a gassy tummy, and we are having to put rice cereal in her bottle - 1/2 tsp per ounce of form.

Last night was the first night following this procedure, but she was a completely diff baby!!!!!! Not one iota of spit up at all!!!!!!!

I am sooooo happy. Def talk to your ped about it tho, and find out what they have to say!

Re: spitting up concern please help

everything you said is my experience.
my son has reflux,at 1 month old i was told by his ped to add cerel in each bottle,it helps some, but still goes through about 20 bibs a day.my son is also on simalac advance.my ped said it's not the formula,it's reflux, and he would out grow it in time, she said as long as he is gaining weight, then dont worry, which he is.i even changed his formula to isomil for a week and it didnt help,so i changed him back.just be patient,i have to be,it should get better..i hope

Re: spitting up concern please help

I switched to Enfamil AR and it helped. What helped the most is feeding DD in an upright position.

I suggest a GI specialist..

Sofia goes thur 20 bibs a day, 10 jammies, I can't tell you how many burp cloths and how much I have to change....

have someone check, it could be form, allergies, reflux.. better safe then sorry
