Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

How many of you DID have people that asked where your ring came from?? I thought this was SO bizarre - granted, only a handful of people did ask but when I was asked I couldn't believe they were asking me that - seems so irrelevant.

Also, I got asked - MANY times - how large the stone was, the quality of it, how MUCH IT COST!!!! - I am not kidding and each time I was asked one of these RIDICULOUS questions I was just shocked. So, I'm wondering how many others have been asked these kinds of questions?? And am I the only one who has had MORE than five women ask to TRY IT ON??? Chat Icon Chat Icon

My Aunt asked if I got it at a "hock shop" Chat Icon b/c, her words, "that is where you get the best deals" or an Estate Sale (meaning, dead people's diamonds) - yeah, NO. I said "we had a family wholesale jeweler go into the DD and get us stones, he brought them back, Vinny approved, picked a setting, had the ring made - custom" - she looked at us like we were crazy.Chat Icon

I was really surprised how many people asked. I used to answer either "I have no idea, it was a gift" or I'd say "Excuse me?" in response to the question until it penetrated their thick skull that it was a rude question I wasn't going to answer.

i dont think anyones ever asked me where he got it from. i think thats a pretty dumb question and highly irrelevant.

i have, however, had people ask me if they could try it on. OVER MY DEAD BODY. nuff said.

eta: in my head, trying on someone else's wedding or ering is like bad luck.

No one asked me. I have had people ask how big it is. I usually say: "Oh my finger? It's a size 5."

My MIL had to ASK one of her second cousin's for the ring BACK b/c, when I first got it, I was so naive and meeting some extended fam for the first time and felt bad - so when she asked to try it on I just gave it to her - I was young lol - so, MIL was like "can Danielle have that BACK NOW??" and she gave it to me and said "don't EVER let anyone else touch it again" lol lol She understood I was trying to be nice but she said I have to be tough in those instances. Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

yep, I got all those questions.

i really dont mind the "how many carats is it" - i think people just ask that when they see a diamond by reaction - but the color/clarity/cost/where did you get it is a little much.

I've had people ask me the carat weight of my ring, but I never took it as being rude, maybe because they preceded the question with a compliment.

My DH and I will openly discuss the cost and specs of my ring with people who are genuinely interested in purchasing a ring or diamond, although at this point, the prices of diamonds have skyrocketed so our cost is almost irrelevant.

ETA: I also have people ask to try my rings on. Doesn't bother me, in fact I'm quite flattered. (I've also had people just put them on without asking when I took them off whether to put on lotion or what have you.)

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

I've never had someone ask me where my ring was purchased. But I have had people ask me how big the center stone was/how much the ring cost.

I just tell them "I have no idea, it was a gift and I love it regardless."

First of all, I have nothing to be ashamed of but it just isn't anyones business.

I don't think anyone asked me where my ring was from. If they asked i would tell them.

If they asked me all those detailed questions how big is it what quality is it I would have been honest and said I don't know because I honestly don't know or care really. I like my ring but most importantly I like the guy that gave it to me well most of the time anyway Chat Icon

People asked to try it on and that didn't bother me. I thought they were just excited for me and thought it was nice. I don't think someone trying on my ring will have any effect on my marriage.

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

Same thing...I knew exactly where my husband got it because I had to get it sized. But I just told them " I am not exactly sure , some place he was recommended by a friend ". My ring is also very different then a standard engagement ring, I think that is why a lot of people ask.

I also had people ask how much he paid. Only my close friends know because when we went to get it appraised it was appraised for double what he paid.

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

i was actually surprised at how many people DIDN'T ask me about my ring. the only people who asked were ones who were thinking about getting engaged themselves, so their reason for asking was more to get an idea of what they wanted, not really just to be nosy.

NO ONE asked me where DH got it, but i wouldn't have minded, b/c my grandmother and mother got it for him in the diamond district.

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

People ask - I tell them I have no clue.
It's true - I don't -
I know he went to someone in the city but I have no idea who, I know what it's appraised and insured for, but I have no idea what he paid for it ........
I know how big it is - but why is that anyone's business ?

And if you want to try it on - I don't have a problem with that - as long as we're not in a crazy crowded place where it could easily disappear ........ I once had a friend ask to try it on in a bar on St. Patty's Day .........Um - NO !!

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

I was all about "Jim made it" because my hubby helped actually design it with the jewerly store. But to the quesions

How big are the diamonds
- "I don't know, but aint it pretty?"

How much did it cost
- "I don't know, but aint it pretty?"

Can I try it on? (RARELY got this one)
- "Isn't that bad luck? I got lucky enough to find him so I'm not gonna push it, but hey ain't it pretty?"

Chat Icon

People all understand the universal rule that all brides to be (and brides) are usually in love with their lives and their ring that they are all consumed by the beauty of it all. So I played that card a lot.

What can they say?

"Yeah, it's nice, but how big are the diamonds?" nah, most just let it drop.

I really don't care about the trying on of the ring. I'm not that supersitious I just didn't feel like having it off my hand. But to close friends and family I had no problem saying "Here see?" I even let my friends who are soon to be engaged try it on to get an idea what they want. To me I know it's uniquely mine and that's all i need to know.

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

I've been asked all over the place. I have no problem with people wanting to try it on. I think it's flattering especially if it's a future bride wanting to see how a ring looks on her.

For the rude questions I usually just ask,"why do you want to know?"

DH has shared info with friends who are looking to purchase a ring.

Re: Spinoff to the Costco RING thread:

Lots of people have asked where it came from and then proceeded to tell me that my DH overpaid and got ripped off becasue he went to Bailey Banks and Biddle. If that is where he was comfortable doing business and that is where they had the ring that we both fell in love with, why say something like that?
