We live in Litchfield County, CT. Love it mostly - more open space and more affordable homes and taxes. Miss LI though, especially in summer.

Whats funny is that I was so upset to leave NY years ago...I was excited to be joining my boyfriend (now husband) in DC, but sad to be away from NY and my family.

However..I would recommend to ANYONE who is hesitant about moving to just do it!! I love where I am now (MD)...its beautiful, i am close to so much (DC is right here, northern VA is so close which we LOVE) and my family is a 3.5 hour drive. I see them on average twice a month! (i'm either in NY or someone is here visiting). It's the perfect balance. And my taxes are $3500/year, making owning our own home possible. We could never buy a thing if we were in NY.

NOW with that being said..I do adore NY and understand totally why some wouldn't want to leave. But I've met so many people that would never venture anywhere off LI and you really don't realize how many places are awesome and much more affordable than NY!!

ITA with every word! We had the chance to leave NY 6 yrs ago and just love FL. We would NEVER EVER have been able to own a nice home, and have the quality of life that we have down here. We visit and have friends/family visit all the time. I agree, if you are contemplating moving OOS, and have the ability to, do it. The way I look at it is, you can always come back if it doesn't work.

I went away to college upstate and it was nice.

My parents have a condo in Ft. Lauderdale and we love to visit.

But for me, there is no place like home. I am a NY/Queens girl through and through.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post

We moved to VA three years ago. We love it!

We moved because DH got a great job offer that we could not refuse, and the new company offered a great relocation package.

We do have a much bigger house, and our mortgage and taxes are much lower. But the primary reason we like it so much is the overall better quality of life we have.

Instead of working FT, I am now able to be a SAHM to my two boys, ages 1 and 4 now. It is much less crowded and hectic, and the city is very family friendly, with tons of parks and things to do with the kids (usually cheap or free). DH works the same amount of hours, but his commute is 20 minutes door to door instead of an hour, so he gets more time with us.

It was hard to leave our friends and relatives. Luckily, my parents moved down here last year, and BIL and his family live 2 hours away. It is a 7 hour drive to NY, which is doable for holidays and important family events.

It was the right move for us, as a family. Financially, it is a lot less stressful. Not just the housing expenses, but insurance, gas, and many utilities are cheaper too. Even with losing my income, we are able to put a lot more into savings and travel more than we ever did when we lived up North.

I'm so glad when I hear these things..I get such cold feet, but hearing these 2 posts totally reassure me that I just need to bite the bullet..as scary as it is..I need to have some change!

I'd definitely leave if I had a good job offer. I'd like to go in the NC area. There's a lot of IT/tech jobs in the RTP area. I like the East Coast, so I'd want to stay on this side of the country. Warmer winters (except for maybe this winter....Chat Icon ), and the summers aren't too bad.

I'm not sure we would ever leave. Depends on the circumstances. If myself or DH received a very LARGE pay raise for moving OOS, then we would consider it. Otherwise, I don't think we would leave.

We had the opportunity to move last year (DH received a job offer in FL that ended up falling through), and when we actually got down there we wanted to come back. I don't like not knowing anyone or having some type of a support system near me.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post

I've lived upstate for college and in Europe when I studied abroad and as much as I enjoyed those locales and also visiting friends out of state (NJ. PA and FL) I could never leave NY. DH's job is very stable here, he could probably find another job out of state (he does IT) but I would need to get licensed to practice law in that state since I only waived into Washington DC and I wouldnt want to live there.

Plus I love NYC too much, the entertainment options, the diversity, the energy/vibe, and food. I dont think I'd be happier anywhere else.

I would leave in a heartbeat. I've been trying to talk Rob into going to Utah or Nebraska. I'm also open to Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, Wisconsin and.. well ... almost anywhere else..

DHs job keeps us here (he's a city cop) but we have pretty solid plans to move OOS after he retires. We would like to go somewhere where we can live comfortably on his pension. We love the area around Ely, Minnesota, and I would love to end up there.

Seven more years!!

everyone i know is currently talking about this with the bad economy and cost of living on LI.
I live in CT b/c DH works up here and our property taxes are SO much cheaper than LI. All my family is on LI but I honestly don't think we could afford to move to a town I'd want to live in...our taxes would triple!!!

Probably not leave LI. No real desire to live anywhere south of VA....

If I had to live somewhere other than LI, it would probably be CT or VA outside of DC.

I live in AZ Chat Icon I moved out here 9 years ago. I have never once regretted it. I miss my aunts and uncles and the rest of my wonderfully crazy family as well as my good friends, and there is something about east coast people that you can't duplicate...but I have a better quality of life here than I would have had if I stayed home. I bought my 1st house on my own by myself when I was 26 years old. I now have a larger, beautiful home with my DH, our taxes are $2000 a year and I'm able to afford to only work 2 days a week and stay home with DS the other 3.

The other place that I have lived that I loved was Boston. If it wasn't so damn expensive to live there, I would have stayed there.

Without hesitation I would move to San Diego. I love it there and even though I've only been there once, it just feels like home to me.

We live in Orange County NY and for the most part, really like it. After my husband retires we will look into New Hampshire and Melbourne Australia.

Hmmmm somewhere cheaper Chat Icon We are an Asian family and I feel like I want my kids to see people like them. There are a lot of places that are not diverse at all! I'm not sure of towns outside of NY that have a mix of people. I'm from queens, the epitome of diverse.

I am "stuck" in Queens too. I can't imagine living anywhere else.

But I would love to live in Rochester NY where I went to college. Or in FL. OR in San Diego if $ was no object.

I may wind up out there myself! I love the west! CO, NM, UT
It is stunning out there and if you want a day or 2 day getaway you do not waste the hours trying to get off LI

I will have to move off LI to start over and not not knowing anyone or having any family anywhere has not prevented me before.

Sad to say but I get the feeling it is just going to get worse here.
Nothing though can take away the joy of living in the shadow of the greatest city in the world though....
