Re: Spinoff to sweet 16 post
Of course it depends a little on your relationship to the bday girl BUT overall, It's just a Sweet 16, not a wedding, so IMO I wouldn't give more than $100-150 tops. I think that is a generous gift for a 16 yr old kid.

My daughter received anywhere from $50-$300. The amount was all over the place. I would say to give what ever you are comfortable with. You won't be wrong with any amount.

Thanks ladies! It's a cousin that we aren't that close with, I was thinking between $75-100 but wasn't sure if that was a good amount for a family of 5 to give.

Re: Spinoff to sweet 16 post
We just had a Sweet 16 for my DD. Most people gave $50. Some closer relatives gave $100.

For an individual or a family?
Because as a couple, we gave $100 when we went recently to a sweet sixteen.
But, when I was younger, my parents and I would go - family of five, and give more because it was more than just a couple, it was five people attending.
I don't know what the going rate is now -- I mean, if I had three children attending with myself and a significant other, I think I would give more.

This is just me but I feel like, it's just a bday party for a kid. It's not like going to wedding so I can't justify giving a gift in the hundreds like I'd do for a wedding. It's been a while since I've even been to a Sweet 16 but I think even for a family, $100 if a generous gift for a 16 yr old, KWIM?

I mean, don't ask me bc I didn't even have a sweet sixteen but because it is a milestone birthday isn't it looked at as more important than when I turned like eleven and had people over the house for cake?
Again, I never even had one So what the eff do I know!

Who knows!! I never had one either, my parents gave me my own room and let me furnish it however I wanted instead. Getting away from my sister was WAY better than any bday party!!

Re: Spinoff to sweet 16 post
My parents said - this is classic - OK, you can either have a sweet sixteen party (using that term loosely) or you can have money for a car... which do you want?? I was like, wow, great! Money for a car!! Because I had already been saving.
In my mind, at that moment, I pictured them giving me like two thousand dollars and I'd be able to get my car! Wow!
They gave me $500.
Yes. That was their sweet sixteen party budget.
The girl who lived up the block that I went to school with had hers at FLOWERFIELD WITH 200 PEOPLE. I effing got married at Flowerfield! LMAO!
So, yeah, my parents were thinking $500 should cover all the food, plates, cups, alcohol for adult relatives, and decorations for the party I was having IN THE BACKYARD
My car, in total, was $2,000 and it stalled at lights and leaked oil daily

That's awesome!!!
I can't even imagine having a party at Flowerfield with that many people for a birthday party. Holy cr@p Long Island is crazy!! People in other states must hear these types of things and think we're out of our minds!!
I hope my DD, who is only 7 now, has NO delusions of a giant Sweet 16 down the road. Even if I have the money I think it's a waste. I'd much rather help her with a car or maybe take a really super vacation, but a party that costs thousands.............nah, I don't think so.

Oh emmmm geeee!!!
I just called my mom, I'm like remember when you guys gave me $500 for the car instead of the party and I had these delusions that it would be so much more??
She's like, it was only $300.
EVEN WORSE
How could I forget?!
ETA - she goes, we would never spend THAT KIND OF money on anything! ($500)

Spinoff to sweet 16 post
My SIL sweet 16 was 2 years ago and she got everything from $25 to $250. I do know my MIL paid $32 a head (for adults) and only had beer and wine and it was a Friday night.

$50 maybe $75(really only if its family) . its a freaking sweet 16 not a wedding. just because people will actually pay almost the same amount for a sweet 16 that it cost for a wedding is not my issue.
parties and gift giving is getting out of hand.
if $50 is not enough do me a favor don't invite me!.

my DD can have a sweet sixteen at like a VFW hall very reasonable priced or she can have a vacation. If she wants one at a damn wedding hall type place she can pay for it her damn self. sorry people are ridiculous with these wedding type sweet 16s. and some of it what I can see is keeping up with others or trying to beat what others have done. its pathetic that people care what others do/think. as an adult this should not be a concern!
watch me give in and give my DD a huge sweet 16

I like the way you think! Yeah, after talking with DH last night we decided we are keeping it at $75-$100 range. there's no way I'm shelling out $200 for a birthday.
