spinoff to public bathroom post: what age by themselves?
Just curious bc i was having this conversation the other day with my dh.
what age do you think is appropriate for your child to use a public bathroom alone?

Tough question! I think it depends on the child, and also where you are. I also feel like I'd be more comfortable allowing a girl to go into the bathroom by herself, as opposed to a boy.

DS is 6. If we are together at the mall food court and the family units are occupied I have him go to the men's room while we wait for him. I time him in there. If it is more than 2 minutes I will ask a man to call out if he is in there and ok. My son is extremely tall. If you saw him you would think that he is 8 or even 9 because of his height. When he was 4 1/2 some stranger called me out on having a 7 year old with me. I had to tell her he was only 4. She was red faced. But it is difficult.

It scares me because there are a lot of crazy people out there. I know it's rare but I've heard of children being sexually abused by a person waiting in the bathroom for a kid to come in by themselves. I don't know the exact age I will allow my child to use the restroom himself, but probably on the older side.

I don't have kids, so I can't comment on that POV, but as a woman, I get very uncomfortable when I see boys over the age of like 5 in the women's bathroom. I was recently at Medieval Times in NJ, and there was a boy that had to have been 9 or so years old in the women's room. IMO, it's just too old, but that's just me.

I have no idea what age I will allow them to go in alone. My oldest is 4. I only have boys & my dh works all the time. If I am running around, my boys come with me. It's just me & I am taking them into the women's bathroom if they have to go. Any child, boy or girl can get molested - I am over protective so it's probably not going to be anytime soon.

When we're out at a restaurant with other families, sometimes I'll allow my older girls to go with another girl.

I think I would have had no problem letting my 7 yr old in a bathroom solo but I am so traumatized over the situation in the islandia walmart where a young boy was raped by an employee. I would just die if my child was hurt bc I left them for a few seconds in a situation I could have easily changed. In addition, remember the riverhead outlets story where the woman walked into the bathroom and a guy was behind the door of the stall and raped her. Just too many recent bathroom stories.

My 5.5 yo boy comes with me and will be for a very long time. Some places have family bathrooms, most do not. I won't be sending him alone into a men's bathroom anytime soon.

My kids are 3, 6 and 9 (the oldest two are boys) and they still come in with me. I am not sure when they can go in alone. I think I may let the boys go in a bathroom together with their friends once or twice.

Same here. I don't think 7-8 is too old to be in the women's bathroom. It's not like the 8 year old is seeing me naked- its all stalls anyway. Whatever makes the parents feel comfortable (as long as we're not talking about a 13 year old!)

I agree with this, my son is 5.5 and still comes in with me, and will do so for another couple of years at least. I'd rather deal with another woman glaring at me than the potential issue of him being hurt by a stranger.

I think it depends in the kid. There is not special age.
As for seeing a older boy in a woman's room with a mom. Who cares. We are in stalls. Truthfully I would pee in a stall next to a grown man. And have. We are in stalls so other than hearing pee who cares.

This. My DS is 6 and still comes with me
When needed. No way I would send him in alone I have heard too many stories. And, honestly, any woman that would say something to another woman trying to protect her child should be ashamed of herself / especially since all the stalls in the ladies room are closed!!!!

I'm sorry you feel that way. My son is 10 and in some cases I still take him into the ladies room. I assure you he's not peeking under the stalls.

I totally agree! And Im sorry but it just doesn't make any sense to me! You are not undressing in an open area! It's a
Closed stall! A locker room I understand but this makes no sense. And frankly, what do u want the mother to do? Risk her sons safety?

Yeah I don't get it. People just like to have something to grumble about though. My son is older and recently had to come in the stall of the ladies room. You see, he has spec needs and will not go in a huge mens bathroom alone. We were at a theme park and no family restroom nearby.So what else do you do? I got a dirty look but oh well! I escorted him to the first stall and stood outside his door.
There is nothing to see in a bathroom so this doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I think I'll let them go in alone at 7 or 8. I would probably stand outside and call in for them after a few minutes passed if they didn't come out. I would never say anything to anyone but I can see how a 9 year old in certain bathrooms would seem a little overboard. It depends on the place too- a small restaurant or retail store bathroom imo is different than Disney world or a baseball game.

It depends on where we are. At 7 I let DS go into a single stall men's room on his own after peeking inside while I waited outside. Now at 10 he is on own with me waiting 99% of the time. Large public places Malls, airports, sporting event he goes with a buddy or to the family restroom. I wouldn't hesitate to bring him into the ladies room if I was uncomfortable someplace. He would be mortified but I wouldn't hesitate.

I teach 10 year olds, so yea, that would make me uncomfortable lol. But would I ever say anything to a mother? No, it's not my place. I understand when parents need to take their children in with them. And for anyone to say something to that parent is completely out of line, since they do not know someone else's situation. So yes, I can be uncomfortable with it, but I would never stare/make comments/give a hard time to a parent.
EDITED: Because I honestly don't want a fight lol. I understand everyone has a different opinion, and I'm not here to argue that; I was just stating mine.
