I think most of us don't really see ourselves the way the world sees us. I mean, do any of us look at ourselves in the mirror and say "Man, I am nothing but a pathetic lemming, driving myself into financial ruin, latte by latte, Ipad by Ipad, Louis by Louis, with my futile attempts to keep up with my equally materialistic neighbors."
True. I guess if you continue living this way, it would never occur to you that is what you are doing. I don't know. I never buy things to keep up with anyone. I am always years behind on new things-lol. If I can afford it then I buy what I want, and yes maybe it is the latest thing out there but I would never do so just because Mary or Joe has it.

Re: Spinoff to Keeping up with the Jones....
i really do feel that some people just like really nice things, and some just don't care. I have no one i am competeting with, i don't run in those circles of people. To me its very exciting to get to walk in Hermes or Hirshleifers and buy something. I know so many people who could care less, its just something thats inside of me, i can't describe it. I just love having nice things, but don't care that there are people who have a million more things than i ever will, i am just happy with whatever i can afford at the time at my favorite stores There is literally entire forum dedicated to people obsessing, talking about, trying to decide, doing reveals of their purchases and taking photo's of HIGH end designer bag collections, shoes, and jewerly and celebrity style threads dedicated to identifying what the stars are wearing so they can buy it themselves. PurseForum does exist and i believe they have over 500k users Very much like LIF but just dedicated bags

This is how I have always been. I like nice things, nice bags but I don't buy anything because "so and so" has it. I buy it because I like it and can afford to do so.

Re: Spinoff to Keeping up with the Jones....
The Jones are not going to admit it and respond to the thread.
But then again, I agree with Goldenrod that people are subconsciously influenced by kuwtj but not in everyway...
ie. they may drive a BMW but clip coupons or shop at 99 cent stores, etc. so they don't see themselves as kuwtj...

I think that there are different levels. Heck someone may look at what I have and be envious and I can look at the person who has bigger and better than I do and be envious while THAT person is envious of someone who has more than THEM
There are levels of Joneses I suppose.

While I know that LIF is a SMALL percentage to everyone in the local area, it always makes me wonder WHO are these people that others speak of if almost NO ONE on here are "those" people?
I'm sorry but I NEED to know why you had to reply "I was being serious" to Barb when you CLEARLY have two laughing guys in your OP. I think we are all lost and dying for an explanation.
Can you address this? Please? Pretty please?

I think the question she was asking was serious (ie: who are the people keeping up with the jones'), but added the laughing guys because it seems silly that no one on LIF considers themselves those people. That's how I took it.

DW had a good point on this topic. Many people appear to be "keeping up with the Joneses" in one way or other. However, they don't see it that way. For everyone who says they buy one nice handbag, but live modestly in every other way, someone who sees them outside of the house will only notice the very nice handbag, and not the 10 year old car, so they assume they are trying to keep up. Since we only see glimpses of other people's lives, what we see and notice may *appear* that more people are living above their means than they really are.
Also, humans tend to generalize and overestimate. If we see a dozen people that we think are trying to kuwtj (tired of typing that phrase all the time... ), we expand that to "a lot of people".
so true. we just did a ton of work to our house and property. i can imagine people seeing it as keeping up with the jonses... but we really just want to be able to enjoy our home to its potential. And I buy all my kids clothes from consignment shops or second hand. I dont get manicures, pedicures, hair dyed, i shop at target and kohls for clothes... but then I buy $130 running pants and $120 sneakers. We are frugal in many ways but splurge on things we think are really worth it. Has nothing to do with what anyone else is buying/doing.

Re: Spinoff to Keeping up with the Jones....
don't you think we are all the joneses?? go to dominican republic for a week and spend some time in the mountains, and see how people live in bushes with no homes, or toilet paper, etc. and those people are happy. people in america (most people, because there are truly homeless people and poor of course) are the joneses. whether you are frugal or not, it's really hard to define who is, and who isn't. we take alot for granted in this country.

Being the Joneses and trying to keep up with them are two different things entirely. But I still don't necessarily think 'we' as a country or a community are the Joneses. I don't think that people living without plumbing or without food to eat are looking at anyone and thinking they need to 'compete'.
I think people have kind of lost sight here of what 'keeping up with the Joneses' means.
I think aspiring to have nice things and wanting nice things just because other people have them are radically different ideas.
I would like to have a new washer and dryer... not because my neighbor just bought one.. but because it would be really great to have one that's more reliable than what I have now. I'd love to have a fully equipped outdoor kitchen.. not because celebrity A has one.. but because I love cooking and I love entertaining outdoors in the summer so it would be a nice thing to have.
Buying things because you desire them and can afford them is NOT shameful. Buying things because it's important to you to look like you have money or to create status in your own mind (with no regard to whether or not you can actually afford them) is something else.

Re: Spinoff to Keeping up with the Jones....
I was debating posting this, but hey, why not some honesty.
I consider myself the 'Joneses', to some degree. I have been fortunate enough in my life to take nice vacations, buy nice things every so often, and have some disposable income to do these things. I do them because I enjoy them, I like nice things, and I occasionally like to pamper myself, not because I am trying to 'keep up with' anyone. Does that make me a Jones? Maybe. Am I aware of my good fortune and do my very best to always remain aware of it and not take it for granted? Yes. Does that mean I stop buying the bag I really want or don't go on that nice vacation every year or so? No. So, maybe I'm a Jones.

this is me. i work hard, i play hard but i do not for one second take it for granted. i count my lucky stars every day and know that in a flash, things could change. that doesn't stop me from enjoying what I have because tomorrow isn't promised. i also pay it forward when I can and try to think of others every step of the way.
