Spinoff to Elderberry Syrup....

How much do you give the kids each day?

Also, is the consistency supposed to be on the thin side vs syrupy? The batch I made this morning is very thin.

Thanks!

Re: Spinoff to Elderberry Syrup....

As a preventative I give them a tsp every evening during the week (when I remember, so it's usually 3-4 times a week.) The only reason I do the evening is because I give them probiotics and Vitamin D & C in morning. We take the weekends off of the elderberry because not at school and not as exposed. I also think it is good to not let the body get too used to the elderberry all the time, but that is my opinion. When they're coming down with something or are sick I give more often. "They" recommend a tsp every two hours when sick. I think that is a bit excessive so I may give 2-3 times a day when sick.

When I make my own it is definitely liquidy/thin. I let it reduce an hour and it was still that consistency.

Re: Spinoff to Elderberry Syrup....

I've never made it myself, and the consistency depends on the brand for me. Gaia herbs brand, which has the highest potency I've found is definitely thick and goopy (making it difficult to make sure I get it all out of the bottle and they get it all out of the dosing cup). I bought another brand that was liquidy.

As for dosing, I follow the box for the most part (the higher the potency the lower the dose on the brands I've used).

Since the beginning of December I've given it to them every day. My intention was to stop after the holidays and give it only when they get sick but it was so successful it's hard to stop. I'm on the fence about giving them daily doses until spring or not...

I wonder about this too, have you read anything on it? I know it has anti-viral properties so I assume they don't diminish with excessive use but I can't back that up with anything.

I know WebMD says something about it being used daily safely in studies for up to 12 weeks straight but at the rate I'm going it will be more than that...

This is why I feel so reckless, I'm making this up as I go along!

Re: Spinoff to Elderberry Syrup....

Since making my is own, I find it watery compared to the bought brand. But I think it depends on the honey used

My kids get 1 tsp everyday of the year (it helps with allergies too). If they are sick, they get it 3-4 times a day. I follow the same regimen I use myself. If I forget, I don't panic, but I try to remember to give at lunch time
