Spinoff on Costco - What are some items at Costco/BJs that you KNOW aren't a good deal?

There are tons of things at Costo/Bjs that are great deals to buy in bulk.

But I'm often surprised to see some of the prices. If you break it down, you are actually paying more than you would if you bought them at the grocery store.

For example:
-Toothpaste. Toothpaste is almost always on sale at the grocery store and there are always coupons. I rarely pay more than $1.50 per tube, but at Costco 4 tubes are like $10.

-Soda - There are ALWAYS 4 12 packs for $10 (and better!) sales at the grocery store. At BJs it costs so much more. (I think 24 packs sell for $6.99?)

Other things Ive noticed that are more expensive at Costco:
-Bottled water
-Tampons
-Some soaps

Does anyone else notice this with certain items? Please share!

Bounty paper towels. I always get them for MUCH less elsewhere. Target and CVS usually run sales on Bounty.

Some of their detergents are cheaper elsewhere too.

My brother and I always argue about this.
He works with Costco and insists that EVERYTHING is a better buy and I disagree.......mind you, he never looks at prices.....

Paper towels
Formula
beer
Coffeemate
and anything you won't use ALL of....
just because it's cheaper to buy in bulk, doesn't mean it's a better buy.....

I agree on the beer and toilet paper as well.

I also found that I got better deals on coffee elsewhere too.

I always stock up on bottled water there because I find it to be much cheaper. It's $4.50 for a 35-pack of Poland Spring, when in Target a 24 pack is $6.

I get 24 packs of water for $2.99 on sale sometimes, so that would be 36 bottles for $4.50. I guess it's not a significant savings. Good tip!

I definitely agree that things aren't always cheaper in bulk! Soda cans for one! And bottled water!

My problem is, when I'm at Costco, I can't remember what the prices are in the grocery store, so I don't know if it's a good deal or not Chat Icon

Yeah, we only drink Poland Spring, so it's easier for me to go there and know the price is always the lowest price I could be waiting for in the stores on sale.

I found many of the canned goods to be more expensive than Target or sale supermarket prices. But I always buy milk and bananas there! And a cooked chicken for $5.99--they are huge.

I know that formula definatley isn't a better deal. It's hard to tell though because they are different sizes then the ones sold at Target and BRU. So, one day I figured it all out based on per ounce and BJ's was more money!!

I try to stock up on water when its on sale at CVS. Last week 24 pack was on sale for 3.50 each, plus when you spent 15 I had a 3.00 off coupon.

ETA:

Detergent
soap
shampoo/conditioner are all much cheaper at stores esp. when on sale.

Any of the "specialty" items they have when you are leaving the store. For instance, the prices on the Hunter Douglas blinds and the granite countertops are RIDICULOUS!! The granite is SO much more expensive than even Home Depot. The quality and grade are the same, they even use the same installers.

Re: Spinoff on Costco - What are some items at Costco/BJs that you KNOW aren't a good deal?

canned veggies
pasta
pasta sauce
flavored rices
toothpaste
razors
paper towels
toilet paper
napkins
bread

and lots of other things I can't think of right now are all MUCH cheaper when on sale(at least once a month) at the food store or even CVS for paper products.

Things are almost always are a great deal
Olive Oil
Grated cheese
coffee
nutrigrain bars
fiber one bars
tampons
dog food
garbage bags
food storage bags
foil
clear wrap
plastic utensils for parties

BJs sends out a coupon book every month that often makes some other things worth buying.

Soda I don't buy at BJs.

But I buy many other things at BJs because they take coupons. I saved an additional $15 at BJs tonight on an originally $125 order because of coupons.

paper goods - i only get them at BJ's with a $3 off BJ's coupon. otherwise they're cheaper at Target or S&S on sale.

also - a lot of the drug store items (like toothpaste) are not a good deal.

I only buy a select list of products from BJs for that reason.

Tampons-??? Where can you get them cheaper as I have compared. I get a box of 88 with the Costo coupon for about $12. The box of 20 is $6 elsewhere.

I always used the Kirkland brand powder formula and it was alot less than the regular store.
