Spinoff of the $10,000 post
How long was the longest you ever were unemployed?
I ask because my friend who has saved this amount and it is 2 months worth of their salaries, between her and her dh, they both have only gone about 2 weeks without a job since they started working many, many years ago.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
the longest I was unemployed was 10 months, but mostly by choice. I started my own eBay business and got distracted from looking for a full-time job. otherwise, it would not have been that long.
also, I would not have been able to do that if we owned a house and DH wasn't making what he is.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
about 2.5 months when we moved this fall...
ETA- the economy is changing. The country is either on the brink of a reccesion or already in one, depending on whos talking. It's going to be a time of more layoffs and its going to get harder to find a job.

3 months. It was great. I quit a job that I KNEW would keep me from doing something with my life and made sure to save some money. Great decision!

I have been working since I am 15 and have never been unemployed up until my DS was born in Jan. 2007. I am now a SAHM, starting to do some babysitting tomorrow.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
about 4 months. that was hard..but we made it. I had a severance and unemployment. All in all, it was ok although I was extremely frustrated by the job search.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
for 6 months....right before we were married.
Fortunately, I received a huge serverance and bonus amount from my ex-employer and I collect unemployment while I went back to school for that time period.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
About 14 months...With my first son, I was laid off when I was 5 months pg. I decided not to look for another job. When the baby was 3 months I started looking, it took another 7 months to find a job.
I got severance and was on unemployment. After that we lived off savings and then did get some help from our parents for 2-3 months.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
i'm a teacher.. I've never been unemployed, thank god... and i just got tenure, so hopefully, I never will be.
DH has never been either, but spent several years working for his dad trying to save the family business and didn't make anything then, but technically he was "employed."

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
After my first maternity leave was over, I went back to work for about 2 months and then quit my job. A week later Rob got laid off!!!
He was out of work for about a month or 2 - I was out for almost 8 months.
ETA: I should say the length of time was partly my own fault. I refused to look anywhere that wasn't within 15 miles of my home.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
I've never been unemployed (Thank God) and I've been working since I was 15.
Even when I switched jobs (again, not unemployed) I would leave on a Friday, and start the next job that Monday.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
since i started working in 1996, i've only ever been unemployed while in school (my parents supported me then, since i was living at home).
right now my employment is about 99% guaranteed (meaning the likelihood that i'll ever be unemployed is very slim), so i'm not all that worried, although with this recession i suppose i should be. i wish i had more in savings (no where close to $10,000) but i guess that's what happens when you first get married.

I've never been unemployed, thankfully. Neither has DH. I never even got 1 day off between my last 3 job changes.

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
I am going on 10 mos.
ETA: I was laid off while out on maternity with DS. I literally found out 2 days after I took him home from the hospital. I got a small severance, the rest of my maternity leave and unemployment. The last time I had any income was November. The maximum unemployment was less than half of my salary.
DH has never been out of work, however he was stuck in a job for over a year when his commission was declining steadily. He was finally able to get a new job right after DS was born due to a newer shop expanding .

Re: Spinoff of the $10,000 post
I haven't been unemployed since I started working when I was 15 - thank goodness! Even when I was looking for my first "real" job out of college, I still had my part-time job to keep me going.
DH has been out of work at most 2 weeks in between jobs.
