So a lot of people send their baby to the nursery so they can get a decent sleep in the hospital...and I'm just curious how many people actually got a longer than 3 hour stretch of sleep while in the hospital after giving birth.
My Dd was in the NICU, so I couldn't room in. The nurses still came in at random times, woke me up to take my temperature & blood pressure...they left the doors open and the baby across the hall from me cried ALL night, and my roommate literally called the nurses station asking for more pain meds every hour...
I couldn't wait to be discharged and I slept MUCH better when I finally went home!
ok but that's just you. so since you slept better at home EVERYONE else does too? I didn't AT ALL I slept 1000 times worse

The first night with my first child, I did not have a private room. My roommate stayed up ALL night with her light on reading and talking on the phone. She also had a horrible cough and would occasionally go to the bathroom to hack up God-knows-what. (I was actually grateful I had a catheter so that I didn't have to use that bathroom) I could not sleep at all.
I immediately put my cheapness aside and asked for a private room the next day. I budgeted for it with my second baby too. I slept very well in the private room, but I can pretty much sleep anywhere. No insomnia here!

2 c sections at St. Charles, took the meds afterwards, babies in the nursery from 10pm to 5 am, and some of the best, most solid sleep of my entire adult life. Happy mama, happy babies.

It seems like private rooms are a dream (no pun intended ) My roommate was literally awful and definitely was exhibiting drug seeking behavior...she told me ALL about ALl the narcotic pain meds she took before getting pregnant for various reasons, and would scream through the phone to he nurses that she was in pain and needed more meds.
I'm delivering at St. Charles again, but hoping this time I don't have a roommate. Last time the maternity ward was packed out...they wouldn't even let us pay for a private. I'm hoping March is quieter.
Wow! I am so grateful for SB's private rooms!

Wow! I am so grateful for SB's private rooms!
I considered switching for this pregnancy actually bc SB is so close to St Charles, but I'm opting for a repeat c-section so I decided to stay with my Dr and suck it up for the few nights in the hospital!

NO, not everyone does...which is why I made this post...I was curious to see if everyone had similar nightmarish hospital stays, or if it was just me at my hospital. It seems to be a mix of responses. I'm jealous of those who could actually sleep in the hospital, I couldn't!
The consensus seems to be private rooms are the way to go!

It's all about the private rooms.
Some girls have endless parades of family members, in and out all day, staying till the last possible minute. Nothing wrong with that but maybe you, the roommate, might want some peace and quiet.
If you don't opt for rooming-in with your baby, you might want to actually SLEEP at night, and not be subjected to your roommate's baby crying all night.
Or you might have a drama queen roommate, screaming for pain meds and making scenes at all hours.
Trust me, I am the most frugal person in the world. That private room was worth EVERY PENNY.

I got a great nights sleep! Well, not as good as at home but it felt amazing to sleep not pregnant for the first time in 9 months ( no getting up to pee!), and I knew that once we went home I wouldn't have the luxury, so I took advantage. And after baby #1, I knew thst the nurses sometimes come in with meds or to take blood pressure very early in the morning, so I asked them to please not come before 7! And a private room was a necessity! Oh, and I sent dh home too!

By baby #3 I cringed at the thought of not having a private room after sharing for DS#1 and DS#2 and having nightmare roomates. I changed my doctor just to have someone that delivered at SB. I will NEVER go back to a shared room again.

I think I hit the jackpot.when we did a tour of the hospital dh asked one of the nurses about a private room and how much, she told him since we were having twins don't worry and don't say anything they would give us a private room. I ended up with a shared room all to myself!

I had my twins in the room with me the first night and got NO sleep at all.
The second night I sent them to the nursery and I got decent sleep I don’t remember how long of straight sleep but it’s the most straight sleep ive gotten since they were born.

I didn't sleep well in the hospital at all ......but I still sent both of my boys to the nursery around 11:00 every night, and had them brougt back around 6 each morning - so I could at least TRY ......
Had 2 c/s so I was there a few days .......

Had a private room and also " shipped my baby off to the nursery" at night. Best sleep I had for months! Both these pieces of advice I received were priceless for me. I would do it all over again!!

This is exactly what I was thinking. By the time they bring you DC, you feed them and get them back to sleep, they want to nurse again in an hour! My hospital actually encouraged cosleeping and helped set DD up so it was safe. DD wanted to nurse for hours - she was on my from like midnight-3am! I just don't really understand how you can send the baby to the nursery if you are EBF. If you are FF I obviously get that they will give them a bottle.
ETA - any time you are in the hospital they check on you constantly, so even if you are FF I would think there is no getting a solid nights sleep while there.
Maybe you don't understand because EVERY baby is different. My DD only wanted to sleep the first 2 weeks of her life. After that she never wanted to sleep again  but that's a different story. So she only BFed once every few hours and didn't do it for long at all.
I was able to get a solid 3 hours of sleep in the hospital a few different times, between vitals and BFing.

I wouldn't be able to sleep if the baby was next to me at all. You can't trust who comes in and out of the room. I didn't like that the resident came in at 5 am though. I think the rooming in is just a way for the hospitals to cut costs and not for bonding with the baby.

I had a private room at Stony Brook, where they're all private, and slept horribly. Much better when I got home.

Me too! I desperately needed the sleep, after being up the entire night before with a long labor. I knew he'd be well taken care of in the nursery (probably much better than I could do being as tired as I was!) & I don't regret it at all.
The first night I slept okay, but not great, because I had a catheter in... the second night I slept better.

i had a private room at north shore and thought it was heavenly to be alone, i barely slept with both of my DD's. even though i was dead tired both times from labor and delivery and all the aftermath, i was all wound up and couldn't stop my brain. i remember the second night with DD2 i was so tired i was crying but had a hard time falling asleep

I had a private room and didn't get much sleep...the fist night I was woken up every two hours because I had to be given medication b/c I had bleeding issues after delivery and the second night wasn't as bad maybe I got 4 hours in a row then was woken for vitals

Had csections with both of my girls. I got in a few hours but never got into a deep sleep. With my first, I had a woman in the room with me who snored something terrible.
With my second I was sick and in a lot of pain so hardly slept.

I did not get uninterrupted, solid sleep BUT I slept better knowing that DD was in the nursery with skilled professionals looking after her. The first weeks of DD's life I overanalyzed every breath and grunt she made. So, I didn't sleep very well with her next to me at home either.
The first few nights I was so sore and exhausted from labor and delivery, I was pretty knocked out even with all of the poking and prodding and noise. Your body has just undergone trauma, no matter how you delivered. I'd say the first few nights of sleep are most important to your recovery.

I was super nervous with my first (and drugged post C-Section) so I felt better having the professionals care for her at night while I was taking pain meds or in pain. My 2nd was born at midnight and they took her to the nursery to do all the testing and said they'd keep her til the morning so I could get some sleep. She ended up having breathing issues overnight and wound up in the NICU. WIth my 3rd I was so nervous she would have breathing problems like the 2nd and I wouldn't realize it if she were in the room- so she stayed in the nursery at night as well.
ETA: Had I had a private room- I probably would have tried to keep them in with me. I didn't like sharing a room with a stranger who could have visitors coming/going while I slept and my baby laid there.
