Spin off to Rooming in Thread...
So a lot of people send their baby to the nursery so they can get a decent sleep in the hospital...and I'm just curious how many people actually got a longer than 3 hour stretch of sleep while in the hospital after giving birth.
My Dd was in the NICU, so I couldn't room in. The nurses still came in at random times, woke me up to take my temperature & blood pressure...they left the doors open and the baby across the hall from me cried ALL night, and my roommate literally called the nurses station asking for more pain meds every hour...
I couldn't wait to be discharged and I slept MUCH better when I finally went home!

I was in the hospital during my pregnancy and never slept. There is too much going on and people checking in on you.

i would say i slept but prob not for more than 3-4 hours. i think i went to sleep at 11 woke at 3 for vitals and then up at 6 for the day. if dd was in the room i prob would have slept less. i prob would be up all night staring at her.

This is exactly what I was thinking. By the time they bring you DC, you feed them and get them back to sleep, they want to nurse again in an hour! My hospital actually encouraged cosleeping and helped set DD up so it was safe. DD wanted to nurse for hours - she was on my from like midnight-3am! I just don't really understand how you can send the baby to the nursery if you are EBF. If you are FF I obviously get that they will give them a bottle.
ETA - any time you are in the hospital they check on you constantly, so even if you are FF I would think there is no getting a solid nights sleep while there.

I agree- I couldn't wait to go home so I could sleep! Every time I would dose off, they would come in for vitals or soemthing

The worst was how the doctors and nurses would come in by 7am! It was like a revolving door first thing in the morning. I hadn't slept in nearly 48 hours by the time I delivered and got to my room and definitely never got more than 2-3 hours between feedings. I had trouble getting DD to nurse so feedings took a while and were super stressful all to get her to latch for about 5 minutes.

When I reached hour 55 of NO sleep (I got very sick after birth) and started hallucinating and talking about flying elephants, a nurse took one look at me and insisted she take the baby for 3 hours so I could sleep. That may have been the only sleep I got the 4 days I was in the hospital and it is precisely the reason I think mothers should have the option. At that point I was more of a danger to my DS than a benefit.

I never slept. DS was in the nicu the first two nights and the first night I remember the nurses coming in at 3 am to get me up and walking (I had a cs). I stood up but when they told me to walk, I laughed at them and sat back down. Then they were back at 5 am!!
Actually I slept better once DS was cleared to stay in the room with me. Not much better by any means, but a little better.

I slept for probably 6 hours, which was the longest stretch I had for months after! My DS didn't sleep through the night until 9 months. But I also didn't have a roommate. I paid out if pocket for a suite because I knew we would have a lot of friends and family in and out.

Same here - except DS 1 didn't STTN until he was over 2!

I didn't sleep at all really in the hospital. My one roommate was loud, the nurses were in and out poking me, and I was in too much pain to even find a comfortable position to sleep. I came home EXHAUSTED. I slept ten times more when I came home than in the hospital.

I did not get uninterrupted, solid sleep BUT I slept better knowing that DD was in the nursery with skilled professionals looking after her. The first weeks of DD's life I overanalyzed every breath and grunt she made. So, I didn't sleep very well with her next to me at home either.
The first few nights I was so sore and exhausted from labor and delivery, I was pretty knocked out even with all of the poking and prodding and noise. Your body has just undergone trauma, no matter how you delivered. I'd say the first few nights of sleep are most important to your recovery.

Same here! I was petrified the first few nights. While I was in the hospital they made it a point to check on my vitals at 12am and not again until 9am ish. My dd was born over 8 pds, and only nursed about once in that time frame. She was a good sleeper from day one.

At Katz, I slept all night. Private room. Door was closed. No noise. I was so beat, I didn't even wake up when they came in.

the first night i didnt sleep well bc of nursing and vital checks. the second night i told the nurse i was exhausted and really needed sleep. i told them to give dd a bottle in the middle of the night and the nurse was kind enough to make a note to NOT check my vitals at that 3am time. she had them do like 11pm and 7am instead

I never sleep well so it didnt matter that she was in the nursery. But im sure i would have slept less if she was in the room. It took me a while to be able to sleep through her random sleepy noises.

I think I slept pretty well.
the first night I was a little wound up- i kept thinking about everything- L&D, the baby, etc
They did come in - maybe once each night for vitals- but nothing crazy.
I can fall back to sleep very easily.
I'm good like that!
ETA- I had a private room as well. Best money I ever spent.

SB had private rooms. But I felt like grand central station during the day. Vitals, the pediatrician, the OB, SB's ped, SB's OB, and students galore!!! Night time wasn't too bad at least.

I had a C/S so the first night I didn't sleep well because they kept coming into my room the check my vitals. Second night I got a good chunk of sleep.

I delivered at SB where its a private room. I was never bothered by anyone, my door stayed shut the whole time and my DD was in their with me (my CHOICE) She was my 3rd baby though so I felt like a pro by then lol...the nurse would peek in every now and then and be like "are you sure you don't need anything?" lol

I slept every night. I also had a private room since I had twins we would not have fit in a shared too with my 2 bassinets. I don't remember them constantly coming in to check my vitals. I know they ame in around 6am but I don't remember them coming in after 11 pm
Eta I had a csection dds went to the nursery and I didn't bf

It seems like private rooms are a dream (no pun intended ) My roommate was literally awful and definitely was exhibiting drug seeking behavior...she told me ALL about ALl the narcotic pain meds she took before getting pregnant for various reasons, and would scream through the phone to he nurses that she was in pain and needed more meds.
I'm delivering at St. Charles again, but hoping this time I don't have a roommate. Last time the maternity ward was packed out...they wouldn't even let us pay for a private. I'm hoping March is quieter.

I slept great. Way better than I did once I got home. I had a private room and yes while I woke up to bf my baby about every 3 hours, I slept very well knowing she was taken care of in case of any emergency. They would take my vitals when they brought my dd in to eat, they never woke me up otherwise.
1 night my baby was spitting up a lot and couldn't be fed for a longer stretch of time so I got to sleep for a long stretch.
I was medically totally fine and for me it was more than just sleep, though that helped tremendously, it was moreso about my anxiety and wanting to take advantage of the help I had while I had it.

DS1 - crash c section at LIJ. Slept best first night bc my roommate was 16 and quiet. They woke me once to walk me to the bathroom. After the 16 yr old left I got a roommate who was loud and had her DH stay the night even though he wasn't supposed to. Baby cried all night and mine was in nursery so I never slept. Very uncomfortable and couldn't wait to go home.
DS2 - sched c section at a hospital in NJ. They also discouraged sending baby to nursery unless it was necessary. Had my own room though. DS cluster fed the first two nights all night so no sleep.
Overall.... my conclusion is neither was that great of an experience in the hospital. Maybe better in NJ bc I had my own room and recovery was better. Either way I slept best in my OWN bed at home.
