Spin-off to commuting: Have you ever gotten into it with another commuter?
I no longer ride the train, but I think there are some riders who can be pretty obnoxious and just start $hit for the sake of it.
Back in the day, with one employer, I HAD to pick up calls on my cell phone.
I had one @$$hole guy start screaming at me to get off my damn phone while I was in the process of trying to move to the vestibule.
I didn't comment on the other thread, but I just think in general, this stuff goes on too.
There are two sides to EVERY story.

Re: Spin-off to commuting: Have you ever gotten into it with another commuter?
I agree - I think that some people just want to start things. I was on a train full of drunk people who were all having really loud conversations late one Friday night. I was on my phone talking at a normal volume and some woman yelled at me. NO ONE on the train was being quiet. It would have been the same voice I would have used if someone had been sitting next to me. She just got her panties in a bunch because I was on my phone.
It's a public place - people are allowed to talk! I actually think it's sad that people get so upset about stuff that goes on on the train because it just goes to show how affected they are by the commute. They should really consider trying to get a job closer to home that they can drive to.

I agree. She was probably annoyed with the loudness of the train, but saw you as the token girl on her phone she could take her pi$$iness out on.
It's also VERY hard to not get defensive when you are being verbally attacked by a nutjob. If you argue with them though, often YOU end up looking like an idiot so you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.
That episode with the guy I mentioned above really stayed with me though. I actually remember meeting with my supervisor after it occured and saying to him that I was really uncomfortable with having to pick up my cell phone in a public area.
It's outrageous to even have to write this, but it can really lead into an unsafe encounter. This guy actually STOOD UP out of his seat to yell at me as I was going to the vestibule (and note: I was only a few seats away from there too and he got so riled up).

To add onto that, if you get that riled up by a phone call, I am sure you are going to get just as riled up if you have to DRIVE to work.

Re: Spin-off to commuting: Have you ever gotten into it with another commuter?
The main reason I sat next to this guy was because he had HUGE headphones on & a sleep mask. That was my first mistake.
Anyone who knows me knows what a low talker I am - so considering that & the fact that I was attempting to talk even lower because I was on the train, it was kind of silly.
He took off his headphones & yelled at me to get off my phone. The guy across the aisle mouthed the words & did the circle motion that he was crazy & I was fine. I got off the phone but that was the only time.
When we pulled into Penn, he was ready to bolt. But I shuffled around my belongings & let every person go until we were the last person off.
I am totally passive aggressive (Hi F family from Syosset!)
Generally I keep to myself on the train.
I do think long phone calls should be in the vestibule.
I did email a guy's boss once. Here's what I sent him from the train:
Subject Line: Your employee...
Body of the email: will not stop talking on the train.
How do I know he is your employee? He may be yours because he's mentioned you as the President of his company a few times during his morning train phone call so I googled. I may have the spelling of your name wrong in which case, feel free to disregard. I appreciate we all need to work around the clock at our jobs in this economy. I take many calls on the train - but from the vestibule. If you can you tell him to be quieter, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it? We're on a Penn Station bound train from Port Jeff. He is being courteous and pretty complimentary on the phone about you, but I do really need my sleep so I can work more efficiently at my job.
By the way he's got someone on the phone and asked the person to do him a favor and sign into his computer. He is going to give them his user name and password. Probably not the best venue to discuss it.
He is discussing Phil H-------n?
User name: ===== (edited ) Password' holiday52
Good luck with your deal. He said the guy he needs to talk to is on an island and you maybe SOL.

Nothing major, but I was once moving towards the subway door to get off a train as we were approaching my stop & this woman thought I was planning to take an empty seat she felt should be hers, so out of nowhere she starts yelling "that's my seat! you can't have it, I've been waiting for that seat!"-- really going nuts & people were staring..... I rolled my eyes & said "Actually, I'm getting off the train" and she looked like a fool.

No I know, but to me it seems like some people just get SO ANGRY over the commute. I just feel like if something bothers you that much, you need to try to change it. It's just unhealthy to live your life like that. People talking on the train is not a reason to let your blood boil.

Awww, the tales from the subway.
I remember in grad school, I was doing an internship through a legal services clinic at a local law school. Myself and one of the male legal interns were riding a crowded train and chatting, and I guess I leaned up against this woman when the train jerked. She started FREAKING out and yelling that I was a gay lesbian trying to feel her up.
The intern and I were both mortified.

I'd love to hear his stories.
I miss riding the LIRR/subway regularly sometimes just to tell the tales I witnessed!

Re: Spin-off to commuting: Have you ever gotten into it with another commuter?
Yes I have.
Once was to a person trying out Every.Single.Ringtone. they had, trying each one out several times each. At maximum volume. They were sitting in the row in front of me on the opposite side of the train. I just leaned forward and said "Are you really kidding me right now?" They were clueless about how loud and annoying it was and had a blank look on their face when they looked at me. I then asked "Do you even realize how loud that is and how bothersome it is". Still a blank stare but at least they stopped.
I've also gotten involved saying Shut up already when there is the annoying loud 'I'm important and have to take this phone call and make everyone else miserable'. Not my problem they're tied to their phone. I don't need to hear them screaming into the phone because they apparently still think it works by string and tin can.
It basically comes down to common decency for others. If I wouldn't want someone doing something to me, I wouldn't do it to others. A lot of people forget basic niceties these days.

A commuter actually bopped my manager on the head when she answered her cell on the train. Mistake on his part - she got him THROWN OFF THE TRAIN! Good for her.

If you are going to sit next to me and chit chat on your cell for 50 min, I will tell you to shut up. If you think I want to hear your ipod at full blast, I will tell you to lower it. Most times, people are unwinding on the train, and use the time to either sleep or catch up on some reading. But you always get that ONE that thinks the world wants to hear about their day in detail.
Basically, if you are rude and have no courtesy I will let you know ...you will need to have manners to sit near me
I am on modified bedrest now and am soooo happy to not have to be a LIRR commuter for a few months!!!

And we certainly don't want to hear you call Tony, then Tom, then Jim, then Paul, then Dan, then John and tell them the same exact story.

Re: Spin-off to commuting: Have you ever gotten into it with another commuter?
Towards the end of my commuting days (and pregnant), I was on a packed train coming home and sitting in 6 seater on the eisle when a 30 something guy crams himself into the middle seat next to me. He then proceeds to start reading the NYT and jabbing his elbows into me. I asked him to please stop and he ignored me. I asked again a while later and he still ignored me but then he needed to "air out his privates" by spreading his legs apart and stomped on my foot. I yelled at him and told him to be courteous. He told me he would do as he wished and if I didnt like it I could get up and move. I sucked up getting stomped on and elbowed the entire ride from penn to hicksville whcih is where he was getting off....and I tripped him. He turned around and shouted at me "ARE YOU CRAZY????????" I shouted back, "YES AND PREGNANT....YOU'RE LUCKY I DIDNT *KILLLLLLLL* YOU." I will never work in Manhattan again (unless a private car picks me up/drops me off every day).

I flipped out on a lady once bc she was doing her nails on my 7:19am train and wouldn't put away her nail polish when I kindly asked her to do so. I admit it, I made a scene. Come on....nail polish?

No but DH has.
Commuting on mass transit is very stressful. I feel so fortunate to not have to do it.

disclaimer - DH shouldn't have been talking on the phone with his mom and was probably not soft.
while the person probably had the right to tell him to be quiet, instead he told him that if he wanted to be in the United States he should speak English (he speaks Spanish with his mother). DH answered him in perfect English without an accent and the man slunk back to his seat.

Re: Spin-off to commuting: Have you ever gotten into it with another commuter?
OK--so legitimate question: Why should someone not be allowed to talk on the phone at the same volume as someone who is clearly allowed to talk to their seatmate--or the people behind them? What is the rationale for this?
If it's a library--a show--a designated "quiet car" fine--no talking. But if talking is allowed, why isn't it incredibly intrusive to tell someone not to be quiet, but they have to get off their phone.
Personally, I hardly ever use my cell phone--for my own reasons--but I have always wondered this. I keep to myself on the LIRR--and I am on it a lot, and don't have any personal stories to tell.
How can it matter to someone? Who is someone to demand that a stranger refrain from doing something that lots of people around them are doing, but allowed to do. I have heard people say that it's because you can't hear boths sides of a cell phone conversation--but really? Is it anyone's right to eavesdrop? Can you base the distinction on that? I am just curious.
