Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
Did you guys see this? This is terrifying. They are saying someone died now.
I just flew Southwest last week. I hate flying to begin with. Then you read stuff like this.
They said a woman was partially sucked out of a broken window!

Re: Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
That’s horrible. I try not to take an American airline unless absolutely necessary, especially after the report that came out about Allegiant Air (they have connections to ValuJet) this week.
https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/allegiant-air-the-budget-airline-flying-under-the-radar/
It really makes me think about the FAA now, especially this part:
It has to do with a change of policy. Over the last three years, the FAA has switched its priorities from actively enforcing safety rules with fines, warning letters and sanctions-which become part of the public record-to working quietly with the airlines behind the scenes to fix the problems. It may well be what's allowed Allegiant to fly under the radar.
I’m curious what Southwest’s mechanic situation is...
ETA: I do not trust budget airlines at all, but I’m kind of an airplane/airplane crash nerd.
ETA (again): I’m surprised it was a Boeing. IMO, they are better than Scarebus or worse MD-80s (shudder).

I'm horrified that this happened. I can't stop thinking that what if it was a kid sitting in that window seat. They surely would have been sucked out.

Re: Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
Apparently there is supposed to be a ring inside the engine to prevent shrapnel from blowing out like this should an engine blow. Apparently it failed.

Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
I saw this earlier, and watched the videos. So terrifying, and we fly all the time. My son ALWAYS gets a window seat. So sad that the woman died :(

This is horrifying! I can't imagine how traumatizing that must have been for those on flight

I seriously cannot stop thinking about this. Can you imagine young children on the plane seeing this? So traumatizing...so traumatizing to everyone on board. I know these things don't happen often. In fact, I read that this was the first US fatality involving a plane incident since a crash in Buffalo in 2009. Just scary though to even think something like this can happen!

Re: Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
On the news this morning the NTSB was saying the engine that came apart showed obvious signs of wear. Don't they inspect these fuking planes before they fly? Was this kind of wear not noticeable? Disturbing.

Re: Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
I read this news as I was walking to the Southwest terminal at Orlando Int'l Airport for my flight home. I was a nervous wreck the whole flight! I already hate flying, this news made it so much worse.
That poor woman, how horrifying. Her husband and children must be devastated!

Omg! I flew SW last week and I said it's a good thing I didn't hear about this before I had to get on a plane. And you did! You must have been a wreck! I hate flying too and hearing this puts me close to a panic attack and my mind keeps going to bad places.

I was SO stressed!!! My DD always sits in the window seat too!! It felt like the longest flight!!!
I have to work to not panic on a plane. Between my severe claustrophobia and fear of flying it's just never a relaxing situation for me on a plane. We're flying Southwest again next month to Ft. Lauderdale, I am already a nervous wreck about that flight.

Yeah we got some credits due to a long flight delay on our return flight home last week. So we went and booked a trip for the fall since it was too good not to take advantage of- to Fort Lauderdale as well. Ugh now I am dreading it. Even more so than I usually do. Like this incident has exacerbated my anxiety times 10.

I think they do inspect them though, before each flight. I think there will be some serious talks with the maintenance crew responsible for inspecting this plane.
The pilot flying the plane deserves major props though for being able to land it safely. I saw this

This is so disturbing and upsetting. What an awful experience for those on the plane and that poor woman I pray she didn’t suffer.
I’m flying Saturday morning and I already hate flying. I barely slept last night thinking about this.

Yes, she was amazing. And badass! One of the first female fighter pilots? I'd trust her to fly me anywhere! I give these pilots so much credit. I know the planes mostly fly themselves now,or so I hear, but man, when something happens, these pilots have 100s of lives in their hands. I always think of Sully- who landed that plane in the Hudson River... with no fatalities. He saved every single person's life on that plane. The nerves of steel it must have taken. They are amazing and they deserve to be making huge money- not athletes and actors that we worship.

I'm seriously considering getting the CBD gummies that people rave about for anxiety. Because I can't stop my dark thoughts from swirling lately and I feel like i'm going to have a full blown panic attack the next time I have to fly. Add having my daughter with me to the mix, and forget it. I want to hide under my bed for the rest of my life.

Crazy! I hate flying as is..
Also I heard they had just done a maintenance check on the plane a few days prior to the incident.

Yep. Someone was negligent. How did they not see what the NTSB called "obvious signs of metal fatigue" on that engine? Doesn't make me feel good at all about how they check these planes.

I think this all the time. Let’s be honest, the world is filled with people who are incompetent and/or just don’t give a rats ass. I always wonder how thoroughly planes are inspected and if the people doing it even really give a sh** or are just trying to get through their shift and go home. It’s really terrifying.

I’m terrified to fly but I have one scheduled for next month - and have my Valium prescription ready to pick up! I’ve noticed that most flights that have had really bad issues tend to not be the jet planes in the US - usually they’re private planes. This seems to be the first in a while.
I’m hoping that now that this happened, the other airlines are going to be more diligent in air safety so they don’t have the same bad PR.
