Somehow this is bothering me

We have a new staff member in our office who started today, he is in a management position above me, in a position with more responsibility, making more money, car allowance, parking spot etc, but he looks like he is maybe 25...

Not quite sure why it bothers me, but it does.

I'm not sure why it bothers you either. Is he good at what he does? Is he actually 25?

I look like I'm about 16 - but I'm not. Chat Icon And I have a pretty darn good job, too, with people older than me working under me. I'm good at my job, though, and worked hard to get here, so I don't apologize for it!

If he's young AND incompetent, that would be different. We all hate incompetent people!

Both of my brothers are in management positions for very large corporations. Both are in their mid-late thirties and look about 22. For a long time in my one brother's career, no one took him seriously (and he had to work that much harder) because he looked so young. He's the national sales manager for a major TV network, and looks mean a lot in sales.

ETA - Give him a chance! Hopefully he's a lot more mature and experienced (and competent) than he looks! Chat Icon

I'm sooo with you on that. It's scary, isn't it? I worked in a law firm for 12 years, and every year, the attorneys just kept getting younger and younger. By the time I left that job, I'd see them going to clients, etc., and wonder if they had permission slips from mommy to leave the office unaccompanied.

ETA: I don't mean any offense to young professionals out there, it just takes getting used to from the support staff side, that's all! Chat Icon

I highly doubt that the lawyers were actually starting any younger... I think maybe they were starting to look younger to you?

I know the older I get, the younger "young people" look to me. I'm pretty sure they're not any younger than I was starting out -- they just look younger to me now that I'm older. (ETA - and I'm still pretty young. Maybe I'm an old soul? Chat Icon)

What I really meant was that I was getting older (sarcasm, sorry - doesn't always translate well when written). I started working there at 20, and was considered an "old timer" when I left, so the attys were "younger and younger" than I was.
