Some positive Ebola news

Just wanted to post some positive things in the news about Ebola.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/20/health/ebola-outbreak-roundup/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Forty-three people who came into contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan are now officially cleared after not demonstrating any symptoms during a 21-day monitoring period, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said Monday.
One more will be officially cleared later Monday, and four others will complete their 21-day monitoring period soon, he said.
"Thankfully they are all asymptomatic, and it looks like none of them will get Ebola," Jenkins said Sunday.
...
Among those in the clear is Duncan's fiancée, Louise Troh. Monday marks the 21st day since her last contact with her Duncan, who was the first person to die of the disease in the United States.
...
Nigeria: Ebola is gone
Nigeria was thrust in the Ebola spotlight in July after an infected air traveler introduced the virus to Lagos. The case spurred fears that the disease would spread across the city of 21 million and throughout Africa's most populous country.
In the end, Nigeria confirmed 19 Ebola cases, including seven deaths.
The World Health Organization said an aggressive government response and effective contact tracing helped keep the virus in check.
"This is a spectacular success story that shows that Ebola can be contained," WHO said Monday.
...
Spain: Nurse's aide free of Ebola
Teresa Romero Ramos, who had contracted Ebola after caring for a patient with the deadly disease, is now free of the virus, Spain's Special Ebola Committee said Sunday.

It's not "cured", it's not over, and it's still really bad in many parts of Africa, but at least these points indicate that it can be beaten.

Some positive Ebola news

actually this Wednesday was my prediction of Media backing off and moving on. 3 weeks from the first exposure. I didn't expect two nurses but actually that didn't shock me nor change my prediction.

Re: Some positive Ebola news

that's much better news- it makes me feel a lot better that out of 43 people, only 2 have contracted it. I hope the two nurses beat the virus now- that would be the best news on this story

Some positive Ebola news

There are some things I feel much better about now..the main one being that none of Duncans family contracted Ebola despite being in close range with him while he was sick. I think as the patient becomes sicker the virus then becomes easier to catch hence why the 2 nurses caught Ebola.

I think it's great that the nurse in Spain is now Ebola free and I pray the nurses here that are sick have that same outcome.

It's great and speaks volumes that Liberia was able to contain their outbreak however they closed their borders to Ebola stricken African countries. IMO that helped tremendously in containing the outbreak and that is something we here in the US should do until the outbreak in Africa is contained. I will feel much much better if the US decides to close the border to passengers originating from Ebola stricken countries.

I really hope this eases people's fears. His family that he lived with before he was hospitalized did not get it. This shows that it is not so easy to catch. And if def not airborne.

This.

Its hard to be a voice of calm with the media paints such a dramatic story. But last week that's all I could say over and over.

The family he was with is fine
The public in ER the first time he went are fine
The public in ER the second time he went are fine

If it was so easy to catch that proximity alone was a concern then so many others would have been exposed. It has always been clear the symptoms had to be severe and your exposure very closely related to the sick person's bodily fluids.

The two nurses were VERY exposed. And only 2 of them of the whole staff contracted it. All things considered that not only makes sense but is pretty good averages.

Re: Some positive Ebola news

Excellent post. My theory is now that is it probably only really contagious when extremely ill AND the nurses probably were exposed prior to the the increased safety precautions being taken. Also, I read they used tape on their necks and peeling that off alone will cause breaks in the skin. I Chat Icon they fully recover, so far, so good it seems.

I'm feeling a lot better about it now too. I feel like the last week or so was really crucial. Things could have gotten a LOT worse or much better. Glad to see it's been the latter of the two.

Thanks for posting.

I am a panicker. People roll their eyes at me, think I take things to the extreme, but it's just who I am. I can't help it.

This does make me feel better.
