So...Hannah got kicked out today from daycare

i was so sad and angry today. "3 strikes and your out" really stinks. i had to leave work to pick her up. thank goodness for nice bosses.

she can go back next week. but now we need to figure out a plan to get her to stop attempting to bite, otherwise they will continue to send her home.

i dont really agree with this policy. i think it is not fair, but i understand why they need to do it. but they seem to care more about the other kids than they do about stopping her attempts. it is so obvious to me that she is doing it out of frustration and attention.

dh and i are meeting with them asap to formulate a plan of action.

sorry for the rambling. its been a long day.

I'm so incredibly sorry. I think that's the most ridiculous thing. How is "suspending" a baby from daycare going to teach her to deal with being frustrated? It's not like she's some monster. I'm so angry for you and HannahChat Icon Chat Icon

I understand how you feel but unfortunately, the parents of the children she is biting may not feel the same way. I worked in a daycare for a few years when I was younger and b/c the ratios are usually higher with the older children, they cannot focus all their attention on one child and in most day care's they dont always have extra teachers to come and help.

Re: So...Hannah got kicked out today from daycare

I think it's ridiculous that your DC got kicked out. You are right it seems like she is looking for attention and I think the Dakar she is in...probably Isn't the right spot for her. I think the daycare should talk to her and make her feel important in other things she does..not just punish her.

I hope it works out for you and kisses and hugs to Hannah it seems like she is frustrated about something and for her to get singled out in the class and sent home probably didn't help the situation.

I am so sorry. Seems a little harsh to kick her out for the week. What is that teaching her? Sounds like they should be doing more to help her, rather than just sending her home. I hope everything goes well with the meeting with them and you all come up with a plan!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

fyi hannah is 19 months old and has yet to actually break skin or even close her mouth on anyone.

she has only "attempted to bite."

not for anything, but why should they even tell the other the parent if she is only attempting.

she could be trying to kiss the kids for all they know.

Re: So...Hannah got kicked out today from daycare

JMO but I do not think they are trying to teach her a lesson as much as they are trying to get you to work on the biting issue. Obviously this is an inconvienence for you and she will have no idea what is going on. On the other hand they have to protect the other kids and themselves. They will be liable if there is an ongoing issue and they do not deal with it. They are trying to cover there own a$$. I feel for you, I do not think it is an overnight fix, It is a phase and it will get better.Chat Icon

Re: So...Hannah got kicked out today from daycare

Sounds like they jumped the gun a little bit. Considering she didn't actually "bite" a kid yet. So because she might bite someone they kicked her out?? They should kick all the kids out for that matter, because anyone of them could bite at any minute. I am so mad for you!!

Woah.....I can't believe this.

From your posts it seems she isn't being properly supervised...did they give you an antecedent for her behavior?

Re: So...Hannah got kicked out today from daycare

I can understand the frustration on your side and also on their side.

But, they spend a LARGE amount of time with her. I would challenge this argument. What happened at their facility to create this situation? Did she learn to bite while at daycare? Why is she left unsupervised that she can bite another child? What solution are they proposing?

I think it's absurd that they threw her out for that. It's not like she's throwing chairs. She's frustrated & not able to express her feelings. IT IS PERFECTLY NORMAL AT THAT AGE.

She's not the first biter they've had. What did they do with the others? Surely they have enough experience that they should be able to handle this. If she was 3-4 years old - than I would say they have an issue.

I hate to say this but from experience, you may want to start looking at other daycares just in case.Chat Icon

Re: So...Hannah got kicked out today from daycare

Well you wrote, that they seem to care about the other kids more then her attempts. Im sorry but I agree with that.

If my kid were there, I would want them worrying about them while Im not there to control the situation.

I think that it lies on the parents to find out the causes etc.

BUT, that said, you said she never actually broke skin or anything...so then in that situation, I would be mad yes that they kicked her out when it doesnt seem she did anything wrong yet?

Hang in there Chat Icon

ETA_ Like Barb posted, its normal at this age, so while I agree with their wanting to protect the other kids, I guess I wouldnt think it was "right" unless she had actually been biting kids constantly ya know?"

I think it's just an unpleasant situation all around - I can totally see both sides. In this crazy world we live in, I can certainly understand the daycare erring on the side of caution in these circumstances.

When you say she hasn't actually bitten yet - is it because they spot it and redirect her before it gets to that point, or does Hannah stop herself from actually biting?
