Of course the guy was wrong but the conductor was very dramatic to call the cops over name calling.

Wrong on both accounts, BUT with all the suspended service and delays maybe they could have had a heart and not charged the guy the step up fare..just my 2 cents

Re: So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?

I'm on the side of the conductor. That was verbal harrsement and regardless of feeling frustrated or annoyed whatever.. the passenger should not have responded in such a manner. The person's a grown up.. deal with it.
Maybe the conductor did feel threatened.. I mean, if I was the conductor, and someone called me something like that for doing my job, I'd be so upset and scared to walk back into that car. A person should feel safe doing their job.. and he called the cops.

And I agree with the pp, who is to say that he won't be frustrated by other things and lash out passengers.

Just because the riders were frustrated doesn't mean they have to verbally abuse the guy!

I'm siding with the conductor here. He should have been taken off the train because who's to say that he wasn't going to start "getting frustrated" with other passengers? Calling someone that name is definately not just frustration. That sounds like someone who is looking to start something to me. Those are very harsh words and I'm sure they were said loudly with lots of anger behind them.

Agreed

100% agree. DH works for the LIRR. There are many times he tells me stories that make me nervous for his safety.

Agreed!

The guy should have been removed from the train.

I agree. I'm so glad I don't take the lirr right now. I can't deal with some of these pos passengers.

It's not like that was the conductors call. He was just doing what he was told to.

i agree
and as another poster said... substitute another name instead of f@g*t and would people feel differently? Maybe the conductor over reacted slightly by calling the cops, but maybe he also felt like it wasn't safe to go back by that passenger anymore and he couldn't do his job properly

who knows? either way.. a 5 min delay is hardly anything to complain about in the grand scheme of things if it got that customer to cool down and the conductor at least felt better about doing his job.

and just because there have been significant service delays or disruptions for the past few days (although things are fairly back to normal now) doesn't mean the conductor should've given the guy a break on his ticket price.. it's not his call to make and not something he should do for any random passenger who might be frustrated. We're all frustrated riding the LIRR lately with the delays and fare hikes..

I agree 100%

And why should that guy, who acted out inappropriately, get special treatment, when all the other respectable passengers had to pay??? It would only promote that type of behavior.

5 minutes to me is not a significant delay.

clearly, the conductor felt threatened. he made a quick judgement call and it seems it ended rather quickly.

you never know what some people are capiable of.

No one was saying that 5 minutes is a significant delay but when they call the cops, they have no way of knowing how long it will take.

I'm not on either side really. I was just curious as to who was on DH's train, and both of us often wonder. I do think that not many people realize how difficult it is to be a train conductor. Conductors are the first person that passengers are going to ask questions of when there is any delay, they work in very small quarters , and personally, I get motion sickness so it would be a tough job for me.

Not only verbal assault but HATE SPEECH. That conductor was totally right to call the cops to get that "person" kicked off the train. It doesn't matter that he paid right away, there was no reason for him to give the conductor any grief, let alone disgusting words like that.

I'm with the conductor too. That is pretty serious name calling and I don't think it takes a lot from there for things to become dangerous.
