So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?
This is the message I got. I will withhold my opinion but I am always curious as to who is on the train with DH (well, sometimes he runs into LIFers that he has met before so then he knows). I wonder if DH is mad that I asked him to take an earlier train because I wasn't going to be able to pick up DS.
e-mail message: The train was just held up in Jamaica for 5 minutes because a customer called a conductor a f%ckin f%ggot when the conductor asked him to pay the step up fare. The customer did pay it immediately. The conductor was so upset he called for police assistance when the train got to Jamaica. The police told the conductor they would not do anything because the guy was probably just frustrated with the service during the snowstorm.

wasn't on the train but have people lost their minds?
who gives anyone a right to lash out and a person doing their job like that?
If you're frustrated go hit a bucket of balls.
and the police? I don't think the police should have been called unless the conductor felt that he or the other riders were in danger.

Re: So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?
They are both jerks.
ETA: I'm changing my answer after talking to DH, who commutes everyday. He told me what the conductors go through trying to get people to pay, and if this guy was calling the conductor names, he should be thrown off the train. So I'll go with his answer since I don't commute!

Both are idiots- passenger for calling someone a faggot, and conductor - for losing his cool on the job, especially in these conditions!

Jerkoff #1 should never have said that.
But Jerkoff #2 should have only called the police if he felt that Jerkoff #1 was a threat to customers and crew. Which he probably was not, since as reported, he paid the amount immediately.
They deserve each other!

The rider was obviously an azz for calling the conductor what he did. However, unless the customer was refusing to pay or causing an ongoing disturbance and disrupting service, the conductor should have ignored him and not bothered the police with such pettiness. What a waste of time.

I wasn't on the train but I agree with Jax
Except I would add that they both should have been taken from the train to duke it out at Jamaica so the customers could be on their merry way.

I was stuck at Jamaica for a while but I didn't know why. Was it the 412 to Massapequa Park?

Re: So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?
Just because the riders were frustrated doesn't mean they have to verbally abuse the guy!
I'm siding with the conductor here. He should have been taken off the train because who's to say that he wasn't going to start "getting frustrated" with other passengers? Calling someone that name is definately not just frustration. That sounds like someone who is looking to start something to me. Those are very harsh words and I'm sure they were said loudly with lots of anger behind them.

I tend to agree with this as well. Someone that would escalate to that level when asked to do something that is pretty normal and expected obviously has serious issues.
We don't know all the details, but I feel that sometimes it's best to just err on the side of caution.
Could you imagine the chaos that could've happened if the conductor didn't do anything and this guy ended up becoming violent?
Or if some other crazy nutjob(s) fed into this nonsense and started with him?
It should be a lesson for everyone IMO on how to act in public.
There's not really ANY excuse to be like this IMO, as well.
This is an example I would probably give to some of the clients I work with who have brain damage and anger issues...........you need to learn coping mechanisms because you never know what could happen as a result of your anger.

Re: So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?
I feel for the train conductor, I think, but just going by based what I read. That is verbal assault.
The scary thing is, these days, you can't seem to be too careful. People snap. He may have called for backup just in case, KWIM? Maybe that is their protocol, who knows.
I keep thinking of the guy who went in during a school board meeting and opened fire...scary. You just never know these days.
As a passenger on that train, if I had witnessed that kind of behavior, I would have been scared.

Re: So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?
Something to think about....
the passenger called the conductor a "f'n f__got".
Some say, no harm done.
Would you feel that way if it was "n__ger" or "k_ke" instead of "f__got"???

Re: So, was anyone on my husband's train tonight?
My dad is a conductor for the LIRR and you wouldn't believe how many people give him a hard time when he asks them to pay.
Calling the police though- that was a little unnecessary.
