So sad....BF & Sushi

So I went to my BF class last night - she said no sushi while BF - I am so sad right now.

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

Really? I read otherwise. The only thing I saw was that you have to treat fish with moderation, like when you were PG, because of mercury.

It's the same when pregnant when nursing. Same rules apply. With that said I never pumped and dumped when I drank a glass of wine at night. I would nurse her, put her down and 4hrs. later she got the boob juice! It's ok.

Wow, I have heard all over that sushi is fine while BF, but just in moderation due to the mercury.

Only raw sushi, you can eat cooked sushi rolls. I did, had no problems.

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

See, I was told it was fine too. Same with cold cuts, etc.

This is a great breastfeeding website:
http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-foods.html#list

ETA: from the website:

Can I eat sushi?
Yes; just make certain that you are comfortable with the source and care of the raw fish (reputable sushi bars are very careful about this). Like any raw food, sushi can carry carry parasites or a bacteria called listeria monocytogenes (see below for more on listeriosis), and some species of fish should be avoided due to mercury levels. The consensus among breastfeeding experts seems to be that eating raw-fish-sushi doesn't pose a problem for a breastfeeding baby (though it has the potential to make mom sick).

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

Hmmmmmm. I ate sushi while breastfeeding. I wasnt told that you couldn't eat it. I would die if I couldn't eat sushi after pregnancy. I couldnt eat it during my whole pregnancy and was feening for it after I had DS.

You follow the same rules when you BF that you do while PG.

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

I ate sushi and BF with Ella, and plan to do the same with #2.

I really see no reason not to, and I dont agree that the rules are the same when PG and BF. But you have to follow guidelines that you are personally comfortable with.

You may not agree with them but those are the recommendations that most doctors will tell you. You are always free to do what you want. Chat Icon

I asked a woman from LLL specifically this question and she said it was fine. My ped also said it was fine.

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

I've been told (and have read) that eating sushi while BF is perfectly safe and fine.

That what passes through you to baby, via breastmilk, is not the same as what passes through you to baby, via the umbilical cord. If you think about it, it makes sense.

You get different opinions depending on the doctor, so I don't know about "most" being against it. My OB said its fine, as did my pediatrician (who's often at our sushi dinners) and the drs of many of those that posted above.

Everyone has different opinions and different guidelines, but physically what is transferred to the baby during BFing is not the same as when you're PG.

This is EXACTLY what I heard and I am really hoping this is true...I totally put my sushi order in (not due for another 2 1/2 months!) with a friend and she is bringing me some in the hospital. Chat Icon

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

Weird info. I've been breastfeeding for over a year and never heard that. Maybe they are concerned about the mercury levels? In that case, eat the fatty fish in moderation, but you can definately eat sushi while breastfeeding.Chat Icon

ETA: BTW there is no reason to pump and dump after alcohol -- your body clears the alcohol naturally. Also, the amounts that transfer through breastmilk are very small. As long as you're not binge drinking your fine. As long as you're sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to breastfeed. Check out kellymom.com for good info on this.

Re: So sad....BF & Sushi

I think the concern is with listeria, which is very serious when the baby is still in your uterus getting nutrients directly from what you eat. My doc said no problem. I was told listeria in a healthy (out of uterus) person, doesn't do more than cause stomach upset.

I will be eating sushi the moment this baby comes out! I can't worry about not eating this or that after these next 8 weeks are up. Its been long enough already.

Bring on th sushi, the stinky unpastuerized cheese, the beer and the wine.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't eat sushi, but I'm seriously going to have a glass of wine, and some HAM. ME NEED HAM Chat Icon and stinky cheeses. My nephew's first food was ham Chat Icon... I think I can feed myself ham while BF'ing.
