Smoking and TTC
I know, smoking is just BAD.....I would NEVER smoke when TTC or when pregnant (God willing)...however, how long before TTC would it be a good idea to stop? Again, I KNOW NOW would be best for me, lol, but I'm talking about as far as TTC.
TIA!
Oh, and please don't quote...I am going to take this down lol Thanks!

Re: Smoking and TTC
I may get flamed for this, but thats ok, i'm just being honest. I did not stop while TTC, I am not a regular smoker, just 1 or 2 here and there mostly when I drink, but I have only now stopped completely b/c I got my BFP.
I can't lecture you, i'd be a hypocrite so i'll just say Good Luck.

Re: Smoking and TTC
LOL thanks for your understanding. I guess I should've said that I am about a half-a-pack smoker a day and have been for about half my life

Re: Smoking and TTC
Smoking *may* make it harder to conceive and increase the risk of m/c. Some women don't quit until they get pregnant. Personally I would quit before ttc smoking at least 3-6 months before starting. I know I had to be on my folic acid and aspirin for at least 3 mnonths to prepare my body. So I would say at least 3 months to rid the body of the poisons from smoking. I quit 7 years ago, it was not easy but well worth it. I had failed a couple times before. The thing that really helped me quit was being ready. If you are not ready all the quit smoking aids in the world won't help. Good luck

Re: Smoking and TTC
Thanks for your encouragement. I know that it will not be 3 months, but 6 months is around the time I'm looking at for TTC. I am so ready TC, but the addiction in me is trying to convince me that I still have time to quite I wish I never started!

Re: Smoking and TTC
I just quit 8 weeks ago saturday b/c my Gyno yelled at me. She said it damages the eggs making it harder to conceive and causes many miscarriages, also increase the risk of SIDS. She gave me a perscription for zyban/Welbutrin and it worked!! Just knowing that I was hurting my chances was enough to make me stop!! I want to be pregnant so bad!! It wasn't easy but Im doing it. .I was a pack a day smoker btw.
Good luck!!!

Wow, congrats! How long did you have to take the Welbutrin? Were there any side effects? Did you take prenatals with that too?

The persciption called for 1 a day for 3 days and then two a day from then on. I however just took the one a day. Im still on them. I didn't want to get to hooked on them b/c the dr. told me to stop taking them when I got my BFP. So one a day will be easier to stop than two a day. NO SIDE EFFECTS!! Im shocked b/c I don't take meds well. My friend said she had dry mouth but that was it. I take them with the prenatls. I've been on the welbutrin for the 8 weeks. (lasted long b/c Im only taking one a day) I do have refills though. but Im not sure I'll need them. You should talk to your dr. about it!!

Very true. Thanks so much for your input. Like I said, I am not TTC now and wil not be for at least 6 months, but I'd rather do things as right as I can ahead of time so I could never say, " I should've/could've"...KWIM?

Re: Smoking and TTC
I was also a half a pack a day smoker until I got my BFP. I had tried to quit too many times to count. I quit cold turkey the day I found out I was pregnant. I told my OB the truth when I went for my first visit and she told me that it's great that I quit and that I have to stick with it. Believe it or not, quitting this time was so easy!!! I had no cravings, I was not a raving lunatic for the first few days, I felt great. I am by no means promoting smoking while TTC or during any time in your life. I am just trying to ease your concerns about quitting since I, like you, had major reservations about being pregnant because I didn't know if I would ever be able to quit. For some reason, when you find out you're pregnant you wouldn't do ANYTHING to hurt the baby inside you. Best of luck!!

Thanks for the positive words! I KNOW that when I (God willing) get BFP that smoking will NOT be on my plate. I am just thinking now in a prevention sort of a way of quiting. I definitely will not smoke when TTC.....I'm worried about my organs and mucus from smoking. Maybe I'm thinking too far ahead LOL

You're not thinking too far ahead..It's never too soon to quit.. Im not a "reformed smoker" annoying type.. trust me Im still very jealous of people who smokle.. but for TTC..your eggs are getting damaged with every smoke you have (as my GYNO put it) so it will take time to repair them.. stop as soon as you can and are ready. For me..I can't speak for anyone else,,I didn't trust myselt not to smoke once I got my BFP so I knew I had to stop now.

Re: Smoking and TTC
I described it to people this way. " I feel like I just lost my best friend"
that's why it's so hard. You get used to doing everything with a cig that when it's gone..you get depressed..I was more depressed than mad and aggrivated actually.
I couldn't talk on the phone.. that was a trigger...I'd have to brush my teeth after dinner so stop from thinking about smoking and give my mouth a good feeling. We got a new car, (my lease was up..good timing) We bought a treadmill!!
it stinks.. I won't lie at all. I still want to smoke but now I can control my cravings and realize they go away and im not a slave to them anymore!! If I can do it.. you can do it.. I was terrible!!! good luck!!

You go girl! I quit once for two months and remember that first drag of cigarette after so long......simply amazing lol I'm at the point now where I'm grossed out at what I'm doing to my body. Maybe that will help lol
Did you take Mucinex to get rid of some of the phlegm??

Well I was taking mucinex and/or robitussin for TTC so I guess it helped. but SURPRISINGLY I didn't have much of a normal reaction..like coughing up the phlegm and stuff. I just noticed one day that I wasn't coughing.. that actually is the most amazing part!!! You never know how much you cough until you stop coughing.. !! dh is soo happy about that part. I also have a better sense of smell. but that isn't always good!!

I hope I don't get flamed here but I smoked about a half a pack a day while TTC and quit when I got my BFP. OBV the sooner the better but I think the effect on TTC is very very minimal.
