Slight spinoff to QOTD

For those who plan to eventually be a SAHM, do you feel like you would be "wasting" your degree if you went to college/ grad school??

Im afraid I will feel that way, although the idea of having my kids stay with others for a big part of the day scares me too. Grad school sucked for me, and graduating was a huge accomplishment (Im a school psychologist). I love what I do and feel like if Im not working then im wasting...KWIM, Im bad at explaining things...

Re: Slight spinoff to QOTD

I am at SAHM mom now, and before I thought of having kids, I was an extremely career oriented person who worked crazy hours and was very into promotions, etc.

I would trade nothing for being home with my daughter. I know for me-- to continue in what I was doing, I would be away from home a lot just with long hours and travel and it would break my heart. I couldn;t handle being a working mom. I will go back and do something after my kids are in school, etc. most likely. But doubtful the same type of job since my family is my #1 priority. My personal experience is that many jobs don't let you have the work life balance you should.

I see what you mean, Im sure i will feel the same way. However, Im pretty sure my position will allow for me to work part time 2-3 days per week, so that would be ideal.

Re: Slight spinoff to QOTD

I am going to do everything in my power to be a SAHM in the future, its not 100% that we can do it but its a possibility.

Anyway, I started my masters program 3 yrs ago, I am 2 classes, a comp test and student teaching away from being done. If you had told me when I started this program that I would want to be a SAHM one day I would of told you, you were INSANE.

I dont know if this is going to be the best way to explain it but here it goes....
Exactly 2 months after our wedding day, my DH was almost killed in a work related accident. It is honestly a miracle that not only did he survive but that he didnt lose his leg.
I dont understand what happened to me but everything changed it brought back memories of losing my only sibling, 7 yrs ago, and I just knew that my family was the MOST important thing. There is no financial achievement or career related goal that, in the end, will mean more to me than being there everyday for our future DC. For me, simply, my needs and definitions of success has changed but everyone is different.

While I don't plan on being a SAHM, I can see where you are coming from and why you think you may feel that way in the future. Just remember, the accomplishments that you achieved are yours forever no matter what you decide to do. And, if you do decide to stay home w/your kids, who's to say you can't go back to work once they are a little older, in school, etc?

I can totally understand what you're saying. For me, I'll have been working full time for close to 10 years by the time I leave (hopefully not more!) However, I'll definitely still be paying off my masters which is frustrating. The good thing is, that masters ensures that I can hopefully go back when I want to. I wouldn't call it a waste but it kind of Chat Icon to think about how long I'll be paying. At least I resisted the urge to go for a second masters like so many teachers I work with are doing!

Re: Slight spinoff to QOTD

Considering my degree is in Human Services, Education, & Public Policy with a psych background, I would think being a SAHM would apply more than what I do right now (Paralegal)
