sitting up from tummy - added question about babies who skip crawling
When do they learn to do it?
DS is 8m, rolling like crazy, steady sitter, pulling up to stand, crusing, army crawling, but is struggling with sitting up from tummy.
Is there any way I can teach him? Encourage him to do practice it more?

Re: sitting up from tummy
It took DS about a week to figure out how to get from belly/crawling to sitting.

Re: sitting up from tummy - added question about babies who skip crawling
Once my girls could crawl (6 months old) it took them about a week to sit up. They never did it from their tummy though. They would get into the crawl position and push back until they were sitting.

Re: sitting up from tummy - added question about babies who skip crawling
DS never traditionally crawled. He scooted around on his butt. He also didn't go from laying down to sitting or sitting to pulling up to standing. We had him evaluated at 15 months and he is currently 17 months and has been getting PT services for this for about 3 weeks now. He cruises around (standing) and holding onto things but has difficulties with the transitions.

Re: sitting up from tummy - added question about babies who skip crawling
You said he isn't crawling but, he army crawls - I think that is crawling for some kids - it pretty much involves the same skills only they are not raised off the ground. My DS army crawled for over a month b/f crawling in the traditional sense - I thought my DD would do the same thing but she has now been army crawling for 2.5 mos (she is 9.5 mos and started at 7 mos) - she does get into a raised crawling position but, surveys the area or just plays or pulls up but, to get to things - she moves her arms and knees the same way just on the floor - she is just as fast though and travels the same as crawling that way.
She has been able to get to sitting for a while to also answer your other question - she just kind of pushes herself up on a slant and smushes her butt to the side and pops herself up. Sort of like in a crawling position and pushing herself back sideways if that makes sense.
I am honestly thinking she is not going to crawl in the traditional sense now. She walks holding onto things and holding my hands and even stands alone. The strange thing is- she does get into the crawling position - she just doesn't stay in it to crawl.

This has been my exact feelings about DS since he was 7.5m. He's been cruising since then and his army crawling just hasn't become any more like real crawling since 5m. Except now he'll crawl to something he wants to pull up on, but he'll usually crawl there and scream for me to sit him up. I just wonder how I can help him learn it.
I've asked this before it seems related to crawling, but what if they don't crawl
My mother said neither of us crawled, but she doesn't remember how we learned to sit up.

Re: sitting up from tummy - added question about babies who skip crawling
I'm bumping this, I'm so tired ...
DS can pull up from sitting, so he stands up starts cruising, sees something he wants that isnt' in cruising distance, and fearless he decides to test his walking, of course he plops to the ground and 80% of the time lands on his back, usually will fall on butt and loose balance and end up on back. If I say "its okay, lets get up, up up" he'll flip over on his tummy and then scream at me, he's not even really crying about falling, he's just so angry that he can't sit.
How do I help him learn to sit from laying down? Someone must have some suggestions. please.
