Your parents are lucky!! I just sent a letter to my fellow parents asking for $75 PER STUDENT (there are 2 sets of twins in my class). We have 2 teachers - 2 assistants and a secretary to take care of!!!
That is insane!!! Did you have a choice in the amount? Im curious to hear the responses you get. That's really a weee bit much. Who decided that amount?
All the class mothers decided together what each class should ask for depending on the amount of teachers, aides, and students in the class.
On top of that we have a $25 PTA fee - the end of the year gift - and a hundred other things inbetween.
It's inline with what has been done in years passed (or so I am told since this is my daughters 1st year)
I am told most parents do give the money - we'll see what happens!
Eta: It is a private school - maybe that makes a difference - not sure?
now you have to update us to see if there were any blowups about the price
ours is a private school also, in a decent area, but I still felt awkward even askiing for a certain amount.
I also collected for our baseball coach, and Idid the same as you, asked around for what the "going rate" was as far as amounts to go for. and one mom nearly bit my head off because she has 4 kids in sports and can only put in X amount, etc. so its a sticky situation sometimes.

Re: Since I am class mother...
well on my letter I included a form to fill out in which parents could opt out of the gift and give their own...so we'll see.
Oh I also wanted to add that we buy Visa or Amex gift cards with the money. It's easy for us and them!

Gift cards are always best. and maybe a small token gift to go with it.
As a "young" (well, at heart, anyway!) teacher with preschool aged kids, I agree that I LOVE gift cards that I can spend on ME. Some I've gotten in the past that i enjoyed were for spa days and for restaurants (for a night out without kids! WHOOPEE! ) Visa ans AMEX cards are always most welcome.
I am in a class with me, a spec. ed teacher and an assistant, and we all get the same gift.
