Since I am class mother...

I was going to send a letter to all the parents in the class requesting $10 so we can get Emmas teacher one big class gift. Is $10 too much? Just right?? What is a good gift for a young teacher with preschool aged children?

Re: Since I am class mother...

we've always given $20 plus gotten a gift from us. so $10 is not much at all imo, they would def spend more getting their own gift.

Gift cards are always best. and maybe a small token gift to go with it.

Re: Since I am class mother...

i think 10 is good - the best gift that i got was wither a visa gift card so she can get what she wants either for herself or the classroom - and for my baby shower my class made a trunk and it had pictures of everystudent. next to each student they wrote something to me.... I love that kind of stuff!

OH and what do we do about the teachers aide?????

you have to get her something too.

maybe ask for $15.
10 for the teacher, 5 for the aide.

or ask people to put in what they want for each, thats what I did last year.

they put in what they feel and we got a very nice amount for both.

I'm glad you posted because this just came up too as I am class mom for DS's nursery school class...

I think $10 is fine. The kids in my son's school don't really go a full day, and some don't even go every day.

I just signed it from whoever contributed. others wanted to get their own gift, and they should have that option, kwim ?

I gave them cash and a small gift from those that chipped in.
and I discussed it with everyone first.
worked out very well.

I'd say holiday gift. Covers all the bases.

JMHO, I would just sign it from the whole class. I dont think it is necessary to single out those families who did not participate and who could maybe not afford to contribute.

whoever didnt contribute got gifts on their own, from what they told me.
Im very sensitive to everyone's financial situations, thats why I didnt like requesting a certain amount.
whether someone gave $5 or $30 (and I did have both amounts), I signed their name either way.

At the end of the school year, I got one teacher (that I particularly love) a bouquet of flowers that I paid for, and it was "from the whole class"... at the grad ceremony.

so i totally see what you mean and would never do it to single anyone out. they wanted to be "on their own" from their own decision.

hope that makes sense.

Your parents are lucky!! I just sent a letter to my fellow parents asking for $75 PER STUDENT (there are 2 sets of twins in my class). We have 2 teachers - 2 assistants and a secretary to take care of!!! Chat Icon

That is very good. Ssammy goes to a private kindergarten. He went there for pre school also. There are 3 teachers in his class - I had to give 100.00 to be split up . This is christmas time

All the class mothers decided together what each class should ask for depending on the amount of teachers, aides, and students in the class.

On top of that we have a $25 PTA fee - the end of the year gift - and a hundred other things inbetween.

It's inline with what has been done in years passed (or so I am told since this is my daughters 1st year)

I am told most parents do give the money - we'll see what happens!

Eta: It is a private school - maybe that makes a difference - not sure?

Re: Since I am class mother...

I think $10 is fine. Last year they asked us for $20 ($10 towards each teacher) and I thought $10 per child didnt seem like enough but other parents with older kids commented that they were shelling out for a few kids and I can see where it gets really expensive to do it 3x over in addition to other holiday spending. Since he was my oldest I didnt have any other teachers to consider yet but it was more than fine.

Re: Since I am class mother...

Parents give $35 each in my school, so I think $10 is totally reasonable. As for a gift, well, I'm bad with that! I have no idea!
