Sick Toddler and Speech Delay Frustrations... Advise
My 2 yr old (30 months) has been so cranky lately. It's been about 2 weeks. He's had his fingers in his mouth, loose BM's, bad cough, and runny nose. About 2 weeks ago he threw up at daycare so took him to the Ped. She said he had a virus. No meds so we just waited it out. Nothing changed. He wasn't getting better.
This past weekend he was still out of it. Woke up Sunday morning with Pink Eye so we took him to the Peds and they put him on an antiobiotic that will take care of the eye, throat and loose BM's.
He's also been having his fingers in his mouth a lot too. THe Ped looked down his throat and didn't say anything about 2 yr molars, but at his 2 1/2 yr visit he still never had them.
All this and he is speech delayed so even more frustrated b/c he CAN'T tell us how he feels. He gets frustrated so when he doesn't feel well he'll hit his head, me or DH. He'll be sweet to other pple then want to come to me to headbutt me.
I don't know what to do. He's on meds and I gave him Advil for the pain. He's back at daycare today b/c he's an angel there.
Sound like molars? How do I stop him from hitting himself or us when he's frustrated? I try talking to him and calming him, but nothing works

Teach him a sign to use. Like hand on head when you dont feel well or something you make up kwim?
Whenever he hits his head..stop him right away and say No "sick" and sign whatever sign you choose.. see if he gets it eventually..
Good luck sweets!!!

My oldest DS who is 2 is also.speech delayed but has a vocabulary. He is currently battling a cold & when he gets frustrated about telling us something, I get eye level.with him & tell him to try & use his words. If I still can't get a sense, I will start to go through his body parts asking "does this hurt" & usually he will shake his head yes or say no.
It could be his molars but I would think the ped would have said if he saw them. Could be just related to.his virus.

THanks all Forgot to say that he has a ton of words and he's really very smart. It's more expressive and receptive he has a delay in. You ask his numbers, alphabet, shapes, people, etc... he knows everything. He just lacks on comprehending things.
I try to teach him about a boo boo if something hurts, but ever since I put a "Boo Boo Buddy" on his scrape when he fell over the summer he just assiociates boo boo's with the ice pack.
I'll ask him where his boo boo is and he points to the freezer. LOL!
