Mine are not, and I am fine with it. I figure they won't be going to kindergarten with a bottle. IMO all of these things that should be changed by a certain time are BS. Each child is different and each parent is too.

"Should" yeah, I guess - my son is two and still gets one if he asks for it. I'm in no rush and he drinks most often from a sippy. My goal is by Easter and that's when the "baboo's" go off with the Easter bunny!

Mine wasn't...
He actually stopped using it last month. I didn't rush it and he started biting the nipple and it broke so we told him it was broken and that we had to throw it in the garbage. He used the Nuby sippy cup at first for milk now he will use any sippy cup.

no, that's just unrealistic. Some kids are completely ready, some aren't. My ped said not to really push it until 15 months...Bella wound up coming off it on her own around 14 1/2 months with just and AM bottle. By 16 she was completely done...

Re: Shouldn't a child be off bottles after 1yr old?

Jack was completely off by 12 months. We did everything in a sippy cup. But I do think he is in the minority with that. He did everything early though...this kid was full out walking at 9 months! I think it also has to do with the fact that I introduced a sippy at about 6 months...so by the time he was 1 year old, the sippy was the norm.

Re: Shouldn't a child be off bottles after 1yr old?

Bt 12 months of age, both of my sons were so ready to get rid of the bottle. They had no desire for it once they were comfortable with the sippy cup (I introduced the sippy at around 6 months).
But all kids are different. There is no set age for anything with these little ones.

I think most peds say to get off by 1 b/c sippys are supposed to be better for their teeth. But I recently read a study that said any sippy except for the ones with straws were just as bad for teeth as bottles, so who the heck knows what to believe?

Yes, they're "suppose" to be, but not every child is ready to at 1 yr old. I was lucky with Caiden because he gave up his binky and the bottle with no problems what so ever at 1 yr old.

Hey, some kids love their bottles! Noah loves both and I won't get rid of the bedtime bottle until he doesn't want it anymore!

I don't know any 18 year olds who still have their milk in a bottle!

I'm sorry but Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Seriously! There's always something being said to make Moms feel like aren't doing enough (not you, your ped's comment, which isnt unusual)
My kids did happen to be off the bottle around that age but not because Im the perfect Mom. Just because I tried and they happened to take to the sippy by then. But OMG, what is the big deal??? I dont understand all these timelines.

My comments are directed at you as the OP, just annoyance over the constant stress put on Moms (and Dads too I guess) It just seems like it always has to be about what you "should" be doing and if your child, who is an individual, doesn't happen to be doing it according to the timelines, some people get really stressed and I think it's unfair stress.

Our ped says 15 months.

She is almost 14 months and thinks the sippy cup is just a pea masher!

My Dr. never mentioned anything about getting rid of the bottle. How strange that every Dr. is different.

Re: Shouldn't a child be off bottles after 1yr old?

Hayley still gets a milk bottle in the AM and before bed. Other than those she drinks from a sippy cup all day. She won't drink milk from a sippy cup, I have tried. One of the peds in the practice we go to said he wants her off the binky and bottle by 18 months....uummm this is my daughter I will determine when she gives them up.

My daughter was off the bottle at 12 months, my son however still got his night time bottle until he was almost 2 1/2. Every child is different.

Jake still gets 2 bottles a day - one on the morning and one at night - he is 26 months old. He is not reasy to give it up. It doesn't bother me so I don't push the issue. When he is ready he will give them up.

Re: Shouldn't a child be off bottles after 1yr old?

DD is almost 2.5 and when she asks for her bottle (4oz in the morning and 2 oz before bed) I give her one. She drinks it and gives it back to me.

If I want her to drink water I will actually give it to her in a bottle and she will finish it. If I give it to her in a cup she only takes a few sips.

I don't understand what the difference is between drinking from a bottle vs. a sippy cup. I believe a bottle is soothing and relaxing and she truly enjoys it. As far as I am concerned she can have it as long as she wants- but I will bet that she won't want it for much longer.

Re: Shouldn't a child be off bottles after 1yr old?

I think any strict timeline with a child is just unrealistic IMO. No kid is the same and each will want to wean off the bottles at different times. I think 12-16 mths is a good timeframe to start to wean, but there's no rule that says by this date he/she should be off bottles completely.

My dd was really resistant to sippy cups but once she finally took one she never really went back to the bottle.

Should be but mine definately won't, she drinks everything out of a sippy except her formula.. She doesn't take the bink so it soothes her..

My Ped tells me its totally up to me when I want to stop it. But thankfully Jacob is not interested in the bottle. He gets one in the morn and one at night and one for a nap during the day. I havent even tried milk in the sippy cup. Water/Juice yeah and sometimes he'll drink it sometimes he wont. So for now, I am keeping the bottle.

Miranda was totally off by 1 no problem but honestly if she was attached to it I wouldn't have made an issue to get rid of it by 1. That's why she still has the pacifier. I'm not going to battle with her to get rid of it. She'll stop when she's ready.

Thank you all so much. You took the pressure off. He really isn't too into the sippy cup right now and I feel bad always trying to give it too him.

I am just going to do it at my own pace.

Thank you allChat Icon
