Shoe Question... DD Starting to walk

So DD takes about 7 steps at a time, so I know it's early but it's something I will have to think about sooner, rather than later.

Right now we have soft soled shoes that she wears when we leave the house so I don't get the evil eye or comments from people who think she needs something on her feet. She will cruise around with them on if she is wearing them before we leave the house. She is a pro at taking shoes off.

So my questions:

When do you get "real" shoes for them to wear?
What kind of shoes should they be wearing when starting to walk?

I bought "walking" shoes from Stride Rite as soon as DS started taking steps.

He HATED them and they made it difficult for him to walk.

I kept him in soft soled shoes for a month or so until he got comfy with walking and then I put him in walking shoes after that.

ETA - I didn't use the traditional walking shoes - just a Step 2 and a Step 3 shoe.

I bought a walking shoe from Stride Rite as soon as she was full time walking for a few weeks.
She went from a step or 2 to full on walking very quickly.

At first she freaked out and stood there like her feet were in cement blocks but she got used to them very fast- like that same day.

They aren't the old school walking shoes- they look like a sandal but are made for support.

I had NO clue about what to get but the woman there was very helpful in explaining it.
