settle this debate about nanny's work hours
When we had DD my mother and my MIL took turns watching her during the day.
Now that we added DS to the mix our mothers said it would be too much, so we decided to add in a professional.
My wife hired a nanny to watch 2 kids (toddler and baby) and to work between the hours of 8am and 7pm.
We offered X dollars for the day. The nanny countered with Y dollars because "She has to watch 2 kids"
So we agreed on Y.
Wife's plan was for my mom/MIL to be there also for the first month or so to monitor the situation see how the nanny is.
But so far from Monday-Friday, either my mom or MIL is there 4 if not 5 days a week.
Our work hours have been a bit long recently so the nanny has been working later than what was originally agreed on.
Wow, long back story - anyway here are the 2 viewpoints, which do you agree with? wife - "nanny is doing us a favor by working later than agreed on"
me - "not really, because it was agreed on that she would watch TWO kids by herself. but my/your mom is there 90% of the time. So her work is almost cut in half so its no big deal that she works later than what was originally agreed on because it was also agreed that she would watch 2 kids and now she doesn't have to" (plus she got the higher salary she wanted because she said she would have to watch 2 kids)

Re: settle this debate about nanny's work hours
You pay her for what was agreed upon and dont include the fact that grandmother is there too. The other choice is to renegotiate with nanny if grandmother will continue to be there 90% of time.
Has it been over a month and gramdma is still there? Why?

I would agree with your wife, a favor to stay later. Plus, her original hours are already really long. If she is renegotiating for more money, I can understand not wanting to give it, but I don't think she owes you extra time because you've made her day easier.

Your wife is right. Nanny agreed to watch 2 kids x amount of hours. If you want the grandmothers there that is your choice but not what you agreed upon.

I agree with your wife. If the nanny is staying later on a consistent basis she should be paid for the extra hours.

Re: settle this debate about nanny's work hours
as someone who has been on both sides of this equation... just because her day is easier because mother and mother-in-law are there, does not negate that she is giving up more of her time to her job.
can you have it that mother and mother-in-law can stay with the kids, WITHOUT the nanny for that extra time? for example, have the grandmothers get the kids out of bed and breakfast, and the nanny can arrive later in the morning. or do it at the end of the day; grandma's take care of dinner time.
sorry, but i am another vote for WIFE.

The nanny has only been working for us for 6 months and she lives with us.
There's no incident or anything, just a debate that I was having with the wife.
Thanks everyone

I agree with your wife. You and the nanny had an agreement re:hours and pay. She is working extra hours - cutting into her free time for no extra pay.

settle this debate about nanny's work hours
I agree with wife. If I'm working late I expect to be paid overtime. I refuse to work longer hours with no compensation. I have a family of my own to go home to. To be honest it's nice of her to even stay. I am very much family centered and I NEVER bring my work home or stay late unless I have advance notice or in an emergency and I expect my boss ensure I'm compensated. My family is more important. Also- your mom and MIL don't have to be there. If they are choosing to that's one thing, then I would re-evaluate the need for a full time nanny but if you guys arexpctinf thr parents to be there- well then why have the nanny? I get the transition part but beyond that no

Agree with your wife... My mom sometimes comes over to help with the kids or i sometimes work from home and help the nanny. Either way, i always pay her what she is supposed to earn. Ive always wanted our nanny to be happy financially as i dont want her to be negatively consumed with bills etc.

Re: settle this debate about nanny's work hours
Your wife is correct. You asked your parents to be there for the first month. You need to pay your nanny extra and if you like her and she is doing a good job just pay her.

Def this. It wasn't discussed that the grandmother's would be there. That was your choice to make and is a temporary thing. You agreed on x amount to watch both children.

Wife. Why not let the nanny work normal hours and have mom or mil come and take the late shift? If I was the nanny I would want overtime. Also if I was a nanny I would probably find it annoying if the grandma was there watching me.

Wife. 100%. You agreed upon certain hours with the nanny, for a certain amount of money. If she is working later than those agreed upon hours, she should be compensated accordingly. Your mother or MIL being there should have absolutely no impact on her pay. She's not choosing them to be there. On an side note, I'd have a discussion with mom and MIL regarding their presence in the home on a somewhat constant basis in a babysitting capacity while paying a nanny to do a job.

I agree with your wife. I imagine that she has things to take care of after work too, but she is giving you the extra time. Also, she didn't opt for Mom and MIL to be there.

Agree with your wife. Not only is it your choice to have the grandparents there, but you don't know how the late hours are affecting her life.
