Serious mosquito issues - please help!!!
We have always had serious mosquito issues in our backyard but this year is the absolute worst!
This afternoon DS went outside to play football with the neighbors and DH and I went out to watch - got bit maybe 15 times standing on the cement. I know I have SWEET BLOOD
I feel like I can't walk out the door without spraying the family head-to-toe in bug spray! This seems rather crazy and excessive but the minute we go outside without protection we are eaten alive...
Is anyone else experiencing mosquito problems like this?

I have found this summer to be really bad too. I hear getting a bat house can help - not everyone likes that idea though We do see bats at night flying around but there is still a mosquito problem near me so it's obviously not a sure thing.
So for now we use bug spray.

Yes, we are! And they are tiny fast ones too. My Mother has sweet blood also, she is not one to get upset easy or bugphobic but she is upset at how many mosquito bites she is getting this year. My DS had about 7 on his upper body the other day - from being in the yard in the daytime!! I love Fall!!

Re: Serious mosquito issues - please help!!!
We had the same issue this weekend when we had a BBQ.
I think it's b/c the ground is moist from a lot of the rain we've had - in addition, it gets cold in the evening and there is dew on the grass, and water attracts them!
I have at least 50 bites on my legs and arms from one night outside.

Re: Serious mosquito issues - please help!!!
we don't have a mosquito problem here at all but I can tell you there is probably standing water somewhere nearby. It doesn't have to be a lot. If you live in an area where homes are close together it could be a neighbors garbage can lid upside down with water in it, a bird bath. Playgrounds that have areas made from old tires are a big problem. Rather than spray your family with yucky bug spray try to improve the natural ecology of your yard by creating a habitat that encourages creatures that feed on mosquitos. frogs, turtles, dragonflies, many wildbirds-especially purple martins, bats are all terrific. If you invite these guys in, they'll stay to feed on the skeeters. People that use toxic lawn chemicals will usually not find these creatures on their property but they are all native to Long Island & regarless of how suburban the yard is, could be found anywhere if the setting is right.

I am getting bitten up terribly. I could be outside one minute and I have a bite. It is always like this for me, but now even worse that I am pg. So I don't even want to use bug spray b/c of being pg. I basically stay indoors, it's that bad. I can't wait for the fall.

Re: Serious mosquito issues - please help!!!
yes! apparently this year is worse than most. i can't even go outside at all with DS. my entire town (i live on one side and mom lives on the other) is having this problem so i know it's not a localized issue of standing water.
we have the asian tiger mosquitos here as well and they bite during the day. i haven't enjoyed my backyard all summer. and their eggs live through the winter!

Re: Serious mosquito issues - please help!!!
We cannot go in our backyard at ALL in the summer.
My father mistakenly took the kids in the yard one day while he was babysitting , while I was at a funeral.
My younger son was ATTACKED and still has a huge bite on his face. They were outside for only 10 minutes.
So...we'll visit our backyard again, in the fall.

Re: Serious mosquito issues - please help!!!
So terrible that everyone is having the same problems!
I heard from a friend that heard from her pediatrician that Nassau/Suffolk counties didn't do the aerial sprays this season that they normally do - hence the crazy mosquitos.
I have had to take my son to the ped for prescription cortizone for his bites b/c he scratches them so badly he has started to scar himself.
I hate not being able to enjoy our backyard!
We have DS's 3rd bday planned for the end of September as an outdoor party - I am really hoping the bugs die down by then - this is nuts!!!
