Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

Yes, another question. I do like to plan ahead.

If your child turns 5 in Sept/Oct will you send them to Kindergarten that year?
I understand the cutoff is 12/1.

I feel a little bad that DS would be the younger kid but I really want to get rid of that daycare payment.

Mine are end of August and were premies so they really were Sep Babies and I had no hesitation with sending them. I looked at them and not their age and if they were ready.

DS is a late September baby - I am not holding him back /... if he was a late November baby I would consider it, but he's been in a school setting since he's 2 and he'll be ready!!

Re: Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

My younger son was born on 10/15. I don't think I will hold him back since he is really pretty advanced.

If it was my first sons birthday I would have held him back. It depends on the child.

That's a good point... DS is in a formal daycare so that might make him more ready..

Re: Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

Even though I have 3 yaers until DS goes to school, I do not plan on holding him back.

I was a 10/27 baby & was always the youngest in the class & had no issues

Same here. I was 10/28 and had no issues in school. And I didn't even speak English when I started Kindergarten.

Re: Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

DS is an early Sept. baby and as of right now we plan on sending him when he is 5. He started pre-school at age 2 and we are going to try to find a full day program when he turns 4. He just does so well at school, it has really helped bring him out of his shell, I don't want to hold him back unless he's not ready academically.

DD is 9/30. Cut off here is 10/1. I am not holding her back. She will be in preschool with the kids who will be in her class too. I will start her one day a week to get her used to it.

Re: Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

Here in Arizona the cutoff is 8/31. My daughters birthday is August 1st. She turns 5 7 days before school starts. She also is taking a kindergarten jumpstart program 3 weeks before that. I don't feel like her being one of the youger ones will be any problem. She is able to do all the things they recommend for months so I know she is ready.

Colin is 10/30 and he'll go (barring any issues that could arise). I am 9/23 and never had any problems.

Re: Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

Most definitely....I don't think September is that much of a difference. I also think that having a baby for me by 11/30 is my goal for second child for that daycare payment reason!

I feel like kids mature based on their peers a lot of the times and I hope that it wouldn't be an issue.

My DD's bday was September 8th and it was never a question.

Re: Sep/Oct Kids - Kindergarten?

My DS was born two days b/f Sept. so he is almost a Sept kid. I will absolutely send him to K the year he turns 5. He started preschool this year and while he was one of the youngest and some were almost a full year older than him he did fantastic and, according to his teacher was way above even the older kids. I would base it on the child, not the birthday. I know there is a lot of pressure around here to hold back but, I think it should be decided on an individual basis.

My birthday is 10/7. I was one of the youngest in my grade. It was hard (or so I was told) but going to college at 17 was pretty cool Chat Icon

Same here! My bday is late September and the cutoff in my home district was 10/1. I was always the baby, last to get my license, etc....but now it is kinda nice to be the youngest of all my friends!!!

As for the little ones, as a teacher I participate in kindergarten screening each year, and we get this question every year. Honestly, it depends on the child. I have a friend whose daughter was a late November bday and she really struggled with whether to send her to K or wait another year. Here we are in June and she is SO HAPPY that she sent her daughter this year. She really excelled and was so ready for school. Again, it is a personal choice totally dependent on your child!!! Good luck!
