Senate Republicans Take The First Big Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/senate-republicans-obamacare-repeal-step_us_58772db0e4b05b7a465de380?gh40bu2k0wikbuik9

Senate Republicans have taken the first big step toward repealing Obamacare, setting in motion a legislative process that could undo the largest expansion of government in a generation and leave more than 20 million Americans without health insurance.

In a mostly party-line vote that took place early on Thursday, the Senate passed a special budget resolution that instructs committees to write legislation stripping the health care law of its funding and spending provisions, effectively ending Obamacare’s coverage expansion.

Budget resolutions don’t need presidential signatures, since they are basically internal congressional messages to committees. But they still require approval from both chambers, which means this one still needs a yes vote from the House.

That is likely, though not quite certain, to happen within the next few days.

Passing this resolution is a critical first step in rescinding Obamacare because it would allow Congress to consider legislation through the budget “reconciliation” process, with its special rules that make it impossible for Democrats to block action in the Senate by wielding the filibuster.

...

The Senate vote was 51 to 48, with only Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) breaking ranks with his party to vote against the resolution. And it took place with relatively little legislative drama ? despite rumblings, from earlier in the week by a dozen Republican senators anxious about the prospect of voting to repeal the health care law without prior agreement on what would take its place.
...

They haven't repealed anything YET, but they are working hard on it....

And of course, even with 6 or 7 years of trying to kill it, they still have no replacement plan. This is going to cost a huge amount of money, put a lot of people at major health risks (or death), and shift the cost burden back to the ER rooms, since the ER can't turn anyone away. The taxpayers are going to get screwed in so many ways....

But hey, at least the super-rich get slightly richer, and the Republican Elites in power get to check another item off their bucket list, and that's all that really matters....

This is such a disgrace.

So many people will be hurt by this.

If this is Republicanism - I hope all you Republicans can sleep well at night knowing you did this. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Well, if they are up all hours, we need to be calling them up and knocking on their doors at ALL HOURS. We the people have the power to vote them OUT. We need to express our outrage at them directly, very courteously reminding them that the wrath of the people will fall on them should they fail to represent our interests.

This is seriously life and death for us, our friends and our families. Instead these pompous politicians bow to the almighty $$ of the top 1%. They need to be reminded there is more of us than of them, and they will work for US or they will be out on their asses.

If everyone who was outraged did something about it, we would win back the power.

If anyone is interested in getting involved with local activism to this end, please FM me.

This is not "Republicanism". The people in power (in both parties) don't truly represent the people. The "R" party in charge now doesn't care about anyone but the 1%. Many of their policies and beliefs are very removed from what their party used to stand for, and what I believe most of their constituents actually want.
They've gotten us into a pure black and white mentality, so if you're slightly leaning in one direction, they have you believe you have to be 100% on the extreme, and anyone who isn't in your extreme is on the opposite extreme, and is thereby your enemy.
Great distraction method. Have the people in-fighting over who is wrong and who is right, while the Elites fleece us blind....

I truly believe most people are generally Centrist, and lean one way or another on most policies. Some lean more on certain topics, but I don't think many people are at the extremes that the politicians would have us believe.

Unfortunately, there are way too many people who don't see what's going on, and are completely blind to what the Elites in power are trying to do, and I don't think that is going to change any time soon....

DING DING DING! We have a winner. You are dead right. I am DISGUSTED by the Democratic Party, perhaps even more than the GOP. They misled and fleeced us all blind, rigged and lied. The party of the people?! It's the party of the Elite now just like the GOP. It is disgusting. I want to exit the Dem party, but I think it's best to first try to reform-- Keith Ellison for DNC Chair.

But people who are registered Republicans and voted for these people - they are Republicans themselves who are now accountable for the people they elected, How can anyone who voted for these people say they care about their fellow man? You don't truly care - you care about what they can do for you (which is nothing unless you're mega rich) even if it means other people will get hurt. I don't believe the people who say they're good people and would give the shirt off their back to others in need if they voted for Trump and this despicable Congress who will stop at nothing to line their own pockets. You're responsible for electing the most corrupt government into power.

Not entirely true either.

I am undeclared. I am neither blue, red, green or whatever. I vote as I see fit.

I am not a republican. I am not a democrat. I have voted for both sides and voted green and independent. I am not swayed by party lies.

I know democrats here who vote republican reps because their party reps are not doing their jobs. Point is we need to stop seeing blue or red and see the job isn't getting done and kick them out, period.

but that's my $0.02

I think this is a vast oversimplification.

What about the fact that the DNC put up the well connected, well funded, corrupt HRC despite them having a brilliant grassroots candidate in Bernie who CONSISTENTLY won against DJT at the polls? They did the corrupt thing, and they are as much or if not more to blame for Prez Dump than the GOP.

It's comical, because do people really think that insurance costs will go down because Obamacare was repealed? The insurance companies are going to collect, whether it comes from the government or from the policy holders. So, now we can all pay more AND be governed by con men. Sweet.

Most of my dh family had no insurance before Obamacare. His uncle actually filled bankruptcy when he had a car accident and needed surgery. The bill was over $100k. Without insurance people will die, people will file for bankruptcy and all those preventable illness will now not be prevented but all Republicans will get their way. Chat Icon

It's so true that people just don't understand. The key to insurance is that you do not get stuck with $100k surgery bill. Yes, it may suck that you have to pay a deductible of $1k before you get covered but that she has heck beats being on the hook for the entire costs of a surgery. Also, people will go the ER if they are sick and who do they think picks up that tab? You betcha, the taxpayers either through higher taxes or the closure of hospitals. But, I guess they feel better knowing that those free-loading welfare recipients aren't getting a free ride. Chat Icon I mean, won't it be awesome to get a few extra bucks at tax time and be surrounded by sick people who can't afford to go to the doctor for the flu shot? It's gonna be great!!!!!

Seriously, enough with the Bernie stuff. He would not have won. No one in middle america was going to vote for a Jewish democratic socialist. Polls are BS, which is quite clear by the fact that none of them predicted the outcome. Let's stop the blame game. It won't get us anywhere.

First of all, I am so sorry Chat Icon .

Second of all, I think this gets at a big part of what the problem is. A lack of empathy.

Some people genuinely don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.

Re: Senate Republicans Take The First Big Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

How does/will this affect pre-existing conditions? Let's say I want to move back to the US and I have a pre-existing condition, then what happens?

I do not have any pre-existing conditions and I have been living fabulously under socialized medicine for over 10 years, thank you very much. What happens then?

The pre-existing condition clause was one of the best things about the ACA.

Everything I have read is that trump wants to keep the pre existing condition clause and children to be covered under parents until they are 26. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
