I was a teenager in a different time. We had underage drinking parties almost every weekend. My parents would not allow me to host one, because they didn't want the responsibility. But I was allowed to attend them under one condition- my mom called every party to make sure there would be a parent supervising. As long as there was an adult there, I could go. If the police did show up, it was to tell us to keep the noise down, not break up the party. I honestly wish it was still like that. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I do believe teenagers are going to drink anyway. It is safer for them to do it under the watchful eye of an adult.
I grew up the same way, but part of me wishes I hadn't. I got WAY too drunk one time and passed out in a locked bathroom for nearly 2 hours. Who knows what would have happened if I hadn't woken up? I think more needs to be taught about the dangers of alcohol and I love that this law is in place.

I tend to agree. I did a LOT of stupid things as a teen/in my early 20s that I hope my DD doesn't do. When you are that age you are not mature enough to drink responsible or know when to stop. Hence why so many teens wind up with alcohol poisoning etc Yeah the parents were home, but were they really monitoring what was going on?

I didn't drink until college, so I think it really depends on the kid/parenting.
I don't feel that teens are going to drink anyway; JMO.
Do you know any teenagers now? Because they are all drinking. They were drinking when I was in HS, they're doing it now. And sadly drinking is the lesser of all evils compared to what else they are doing.
Not thinking they drink, party, have sex, is completely naive.
I completely agree. I wasn't the greatest teen and I feel like a saint compared to kids now- pregnant, smoking, doing drugs, staying out all night, skipping school and not even caring about it. Try grounding them, see how well it works out.
When I was 16 though, we didn't even have to have house parties- the bars just let us in. I was a regular at a local bar at 16.

Thats not true. Not every teenager is out drinking, partying and having sex.
This was all happening when I was a teenager and I wasn't doing any of the above, until I was in college and even then I still was very responsible.
Why? Because my mother put the fear in me making sure I knew there would be severe consequences if I was caught doing any of the above.
My mother was anything but naive - she was being a parent.
I hope to raise my son the same way. Getting into drugs, drinking and having sex that young will amount to nothing but trouble for most teens.

Re: Sayville couple arrested for allowing underage drinking
First I would never host a party the included underage drinking and my parents never did either .
Rarely did I attend parties where the parents were home knowing we were drinking, this is more of a LI thing I think here in Queens we drank in parks
Kids are going to find a way to drink as a teenager, even if it is not often I think you will be hard pressed to find a teen who has not EVER drank before 21 or college, not saying it is something they did every weekend but NEVER in HS did you and your friends get drunk?
Kids are going to try things hosting a party with underage drinking is incredibly stupid for a multitude of reasons very well highlighted by this article.

Same. Call me a nerd, but I was a goody goody. So was my sister. And the majority of our friends. I am not saying I didn't drink underage ever- because I did. But I was in college at that point and getting into bars with fake ID. I wasn't getting shyt faced in a basement at 15. I am not naive to think that's the norm. But you can't generalize either saying EVERY teen is doign this and that.

Re: Sayville couple arrested for allowing underage drinking
My brother was invited to this party and another party. I am so thankful he chose to go to the other one! (I am 19 years older than my brother btw)

Same here. I didn't drink, experiment with drugs, smoke nor was I having sex in high school (I often think sex comes into play when there's booze). I didn't attend parties, I certainly never had one at my home (No way in hell my parents would allow that!) and my friends weren't doing that stuff either. [I don't feel like I missed out on any of it either. It held no appeal to me.]
I am going to do my darndest to make sure my kids don't drink, experiment, have sex, etc.. And I'm certainly not going to encourage it. (Heck, I cringe at the liability alone! )

Same, I did a lot of dumb things too and I'm sure the only difference between me and some others who have been hurt/killed etc is LUCK. Also, my DH is another one who never drank, smoked or drugs in high school, or ever actually.
