I was a teacher before having kids however, I REFUSE to EVER go back into the city again and teach. I hated it and the commute from Stony Brook to Queens was just too much. When my youngest is in elementary school, which is still years away, the only thing I'd consider doing is sub'ing in my district. This way I have some extra money BUT I can work when I want and still be around for my kids as needed when they are sick, have days off, have field trips, and to get them on and off the bus.

I wouldn't go back to working F/T and I definitely wouldn't take a job that's not in the schools in some capacity. By the time my DS's is in Kindergarten I will have been a SAHM for 10 yrs, at that point we don't NEED the extra money, I'd just be working to give myself something to do and have some fun money. Also, we both feel it is important, even though the kids will be in school, that one of us is around and available to them. So to answer your question, yes, DH and I are on the same page. Chat Icon

All the above being said, I'm pretty sure I might just enjoy all of the free time to myself for a while before actually working at all.......even if it is just P/T. Chat Icon

Exactly this, except I wouldn't even consider subbing at all! I never ever want to step foot in a school building as a teacher ever again. Too much stress, especially w/ all this common core crap!

I really want to become self employed and have several avenues that I'm considering which could bring in extra income. I think it's important that one parent is still basically "home" even when the kids are in school, bc the school schedule is unique with all the vacations/holidays and kids get sick, need HW help, etc. So I would not want to get a full time job if I didn't need to.

ETa: DH and I agree with this.

Im still home. Dh is fine with it. I need to be here for school stuff, sickness, and basic day to day things. This is my job, my family and home. Pay isnt so great, but the reward is.

Chat Icon DH and I feel the same way. We also would both have to commute into the city from LI and would have to leave early like 6am the latest, him even earlier, and then be back on LI around 5pm and later some days. We have no family members that can help with pick up/drop off or watching the kids for an hour or two until pick up/drop off. I have no problem staying home and DH doesn't mind either. However, I do have student loans and got my masters and I just wonder if I would ever be able to find PT work that I would enjoy in my degree area and that would some decent part time money. I never thought I would be considering never going back to work but here I am :) I like my job and worked really hard to get my degrees and my job. So, I go back and forth. Bottom line: I like my job but I love my family and being home with my kids so much more. Thank you everyone for sharing details and your perspective.

Re: SAHM's...

This question is on my mind constantly! I have been a SAHM for close to 10 years. I wouldn't trade this past 10 years for anything. I absolutely love being a SAHM and this has been by far my favorite job. I did work part-time as a consultant for the first four years but it got difficult the older my children became.

My youngest is 3 and I'm feeling conflicted about returning to work full-time. In reality, I don't see how I could. My oldest and middle DC have a ton of sport activities and practices weekly. I don't have family close by and my DH works in upper management. He travels overnight frequently, works long hours and his office is over an hour away. There is no way we could continue our current lifestyle with me returning to work on a full-time basis. Plus, my kids are so used to me being home. It's comforting to them that I will be at every school event or party. My middle DS has learning difficulties and I'm his primary advocate.

Our mortgage is paid off. My DH has a substantial 401K and company pension. I have advanced degrees and licensure. I have maintained all my continuing ed credits to keep me in the loop. I don't think my extended time off will prevent me from getting a job. Ideally, I would like something part time or to consultant again. I have also thought about returning to school for something completely different.

Re: SAHM's...

I've been a SAHM for about 5 years and just returned to a part time work schedule. I LOVE the job, it's flexibility and the people I work with are all really nice and helpful to each other. I love getting dressed, having adult conversation and having the extra money for my kids activities and shopping. I chose not to go back FT at this time but when my youngest is in school full time I would like to.

SAHM's...

I work from home part time now. When my kid/kids are in Kindergarten I plan on going into the office more, but still keeping a work from home thing. I like that I can make my own hours. I will just put more hours in. I could never go back to being in the office all day after staying home and being able to work from home.
